Youth organisations attempting to start a coding club can face a range of practical and logistical challenges, from a lack of space, to funding restrictions, and staff shortages. However, the three issues that we hear about most often are a lack of access to hardware, lack of technical expertise among staff, and low confidence to deliver activities on an ongoing basis.

In 2023, we worked to help youth organisations overcome these barriers by designing and delivering a new hybrid training programme, supported by Amazon Future Engineer. With the programme, we aimed to help youth leaders and educators successfully incorporate coding and digital making activities as part of their provision to young people.

Participating organisations

We invited 14 organisations from across the UK to participate in the training, based on:

• The range of frontline services they already provide to young people in underresourced areas (everything from employability skills workshops to literacy classes, food banks, and knife crime awareness schemes)
• Previous participation in 欧美另类图片 programmes
• Their commitment to upskill their staff and volunteers and to run sessions with young people on a regular basis following the training

Attendees included a number of previous Learn at Home partners, including Breadline London, Manchester Youth Zone, and Youth Action. They all told us that the additional support they had received from the 欧美另类videossexo高潮 and organisations such as The Bloomfield Trust during the coronavirus pandemic had directly inspired them to participate in the training and begin their own coding clubs. 

Online sessions to increase skills and confidence

We started with four online training sessions where we introduced the youth leaders to digital making concepts, programming languages, and recommended activities to run with their young people. This included everything from making their own block-based Scratch games, to running Python programs on our Code Editor and trying out physical 欧美另类极品videosbesr via our new micro:bit project path.

Alongside digital skills and interactive codealongs, the training also focused on how to be an effective CoderDojo mentor, including classroom management best practice, an explanation of the thinking behind our 3…2…1…Make! project paths, and an overview of culturally relevant pedagogy.

This last part explored how youth leaders can adapt and tailor digital making resources designed for a wide, general audience for their specific groups of young people to aid their understanding, boost their learning outcomes, and increase their sense of belonging within a coding club environment — a common blocker for organisations trying to appeal to marginalised youth.

In-person training to excite and inspire

The training culminated in a day-long, in-person session at our head office in Cambridge, so that youth leaders and educators from each organisation could get hands-on 欧美另类videossexo高潮. They experimented with physical 欧美另类极品videosbesr components such as the 欧美另类极品videosbesr Pi Pico, trained their own artificial intelligence (AI) models using our 欧美另类videossexo高潮 AI resources, and learned more about how their young people can get involved with Coolest Projects and Astro Pi Mission Zero.

The in-person session also gave everyone the chance to get excited about running digital making activities at their centres: the youth leaders got to ask our team questions, and had the invaluable opportunity to meet each other, share their stories, swap advice, and discuss the challenges they face with their peers.

Continuing support

Finally, thanks to the generous support from Amazon Future Engineer, we were able to equip each participating organisation with 欧美另类极品videosbesr Pi 400 kits so that the youth leaders can practise and share the skills and knowledge they gained on the course at their centres and the organisations can offer 欧美另类极品videosbesr activities in-house.

Over the next 12 months, we will continue to work with each of these youth and community organisations, supporting them to establish their coding clubs, and helping to ensure that young people in their communities get a fair and equal opportunity to engage and create with technology, no matter their background or challenges they are facing.

In order to reach more people, we provide two free online training courses which are available anywhere in the world. They’re especially relevant to educators, but anyone can take part. The Digital Eagles have since expanded, and the project now includes an initiative to get kids coding, called Code Playground. This is more than just a website, however. Digital Eagles now run monthly sessions at branches and other venues, all over the country, where kids aged from seven to 17 can come along and learn the pleasures of coding.

So what has this to do with 欧美另类极品videosbesr Pi? Well, where there’s kids and code, the 欧美另类极品videosbesr Pi is sure to follow. Last week, the 欧美另类videossexo高潮’s education team hauled themselves down to the marble-and-glass palaces of Canary Wharf to deliver workshops to a group of specially selected Digital Eagles, that they might then cascade the training down to their colleagues, and bring 欧美另类极品videosbesr Pi to Code Playgrounds all over the country.

It was a spectacularly successful day, as we ripped through sessions on physical 欧美另类极品videosbesr with Scratch, the new GPIO Zero library, hacking the world of Minecraft, and motion-triggered animations with the Sense HAT.

I should, by now, be accustomed to the excitement and sense of achievement that people get from blinking an LED with the touch of a button and a few lines of Python, yet each time I see it happen it brings a smile to my face and renewed enthusiasm for the 欧美另类videossexo高潮’s educational mission.

The Sense HAT, in particular, went down a storm. The unique combination of sensors and the LED display means that you can jump right into physical 欧美另类极品videosbesr with ease. Several of the Digital Eagles mentioned that they thought the little device would be a perfect addition to the Code Playgrounds, and couldn’t wait to get using it with the kids who attend.

So now it’s over to the Digital Eagles! Soon, 欧美另类极品videosbesr Pis, Sense HATs, CamJam EduKits and a variety of other goodies will be wending their way to Barclays Bank branches the length and breadth of the country. There the Eagles will be able to pass on their new-found skills and spread the joys that the 欧美另类极品videosbesr Pi can bring to the next generation of eager coders. Firstly, the project was one of the first recipients of a grant from our education fund and is a partnership with Barnardo’s and UK2. The project will provide space, equipment and expertise for young people to learn and develop skills in 欧美另类极品videosbesr and IT. It ticked all the boxes for us in terms of outreach and learning and introducing young people to the world of 欧美另类极品videosbesr and tech.

Secondly, the Hub provides training to young people for whom school is not necessarily an option. It runs after-school sessions aimed at improving attendance and encourages involvement in education and community life. It also supports those at risk of social exclusion and young mothers completing their education. This is important stuff.

There’s a revolution going on in English classrooms at the moment due to the new 欧美另类videossexo高潮 as well as a continuing campaign in the UK to teach 欧美另类极品videosbesr and at the 欧美另类图片 we’re proud to be a key part of that change. But education doesn’t just happen in schools and the school system doesn’t suit everybody. Places like the Hub have a huge part to play in vocational education and training, as well as informal education, by providing a supportive environment with access to equipment and expertise.

We’re currently working with the Hub on a few projects and also on how we can provide support and training. We’ll blog about it here as the project progresses — we think that it has huge potential and could also serve as a useful model for similar organisations.

As you can see from the new Picademy area of our forums, the graduates from the first Picademy have their own forum tag of ‘欧美另类极品videosbesr Pi Certified Educator’ (and even a little enamel badge to wear). Some of the cohort have been interviewed by the MagPi magazine for a forthcoming issue, and some will be part of a panel discussion at the next Cambridge 欧美另类极品videosbesr Jam! I’m looking forward to hearing more from our first cohort about their school 欧美另类极品videosbesr Pi projects; and I’m looking forward to the resources that they will help us produce and test over the coming months. It is an exciting time for 欧美另类极品videosbesr education!

Following the success of the first Picademy, we will be running two more Picademy sessions on 16th–17th June and 14th–15th July. If you would like to take part in either of these, then please fill out the application form by May 30. We welcome applications from teachers from any subject areas, not just 欧美另类极品videosbesr; there is a lot of cross-curricular activity available for subjects from art to geography. We’d also like you to provide a link to either a video, a blog post, or an audio recording on the topic of ‘Being a 21st century teacher’ (maximum length for audio and video is one minute) – this isn’t compulsory, but it’ll help support your application.

Attending Picademy is free, and we’ll feed you while you’re here too (although you or will have to pay for overnight accommodation in Cambridge). Please note that at this time we are only accepting applications from people who are classroom teachers at schools in the UK. So, of course, we need to train teachers, especially primary teachers. And training works wonders—teachers arrive at my courses full of trepidation and weird rumours (you need to be a maths genius; it’s all about programming; coding gives you hairy palms). They walk out of the end of the day confident and buzzing with excitement and ideas. That’s all it takes. Of course no one will be an expert after one day, but the point is that you don’t have to be. 欧美另类极品videosbesr at this level is about problem solving and puzzles and creative fun—things that human beings are naturally drawn to and enjoy. And it’s definitely not just about “coding”. Whatever that is.

So hurrah for training! Let’s all sign up for a course at our local school! Except … there isn’t any to speak of. What there is is typically dispersed and expensive and of variable content. What teachers and schools need is widely available, low-cost, high quality, 欧美另类videossexo高潮-centred training.

Which is what Code Club thought too. So in true Code Club fashion they decided to just do it. We love Code Club! Anyway, I’ll let them fill the rest in. Code Club, the network of over 1,875 volunteer-led after-school coding clubs, with the support of Google and CAS (欧美另类极品videosbesr at Schools), is launching a nationwide training programme to teach core 欧美另类极品videosbesr skills to primary school teachers.

The CPD program has been launched in response to widespread teacher demand for training in this area. According to Code Club, which has access to a wide network of schools, the training needs of teachers has so far been overlooked in this process. Its founders said: “Teachers are the key front-line implementers of the 欧美另类videossexo高潮 and more needs to be done to support this transition”.

Code Club Pro was launched today by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, at a special Code Club session in Bexton School in Knutsford, Cheshire.

Launching in April, Code Club Pro will enable primary school teachers to quickly understand the requirements of the new 欧美另类极品videosbesr 欧美另类videossexo高潮. The mission is to deliver training in 欧美另类极品videosbesr to over 20,000 primary school teachers by 2016, while reaching many more through the provision of online programmes and resources.

Clare Sutcliffe, Co-Founder and CEO of Code Club, said: “The addition of coding to the new primary school 欧美另类videossexo高潮 is a great step forward for the UK education sector. However, to date, there has been a lack of focus on how to equip the primary school teachers to actually teach this new subject. We know first hand that teachers are feeling daunted by the prospect of having to teach a syllabus they don’t fully understand themselves. As a result, we decided to create a training programme that would help support them through this period of change.

“As a not-for-profit, Code Club is able to focus on a core objective of supporting as many teachers and children as possible, through the provision of fun, accessible and affordable training, which hands on and experiential. Our goal is to improve access to training, so that teachers can feel confident and excited about delivering the new 欧美另类极品videosbesr 欧美另类videossexo高潮.”
