What is Blockly? 

Blockly is a free, open source library that enables developers to build applications and websites that use block-based coding interfaces. That means that instead of typing code, you snap blocks together to build programs. Behind the scenes, those blocks are turned into text-based code like JavaScript and Python. 

Blockly started life in 2011 in Google as a passion project of one engineer. Since then — thanks to the generous support of Google, a small team of brilliant engineers, and an amazing community of open source contributors and partners — it has grown to become the de facto standard for visual programming interfaces.

In particular, Blockly is the 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1 for pretty much all of the block-based coding applications that you may have used to teach or learn about programming. Platforms like Scratch, MakeCode, and MIT’s App Inventor are all built with Blockly. It’s no exaggeration to say that hundreds of millions of young people have learnt the fundamentals of computer science using software that is built with Blockly. 

As we enter the age of AI, it is more important than ever that all young people develop a 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1al understanding of computer science. Blockly and the block-based coding platforms and applications that it enables are essential to realising that vision.

Blockly is also widely used to create interfaces that control hardware and robotics platforms. And, while its main use cases are in education, Blockly is increasingly being used to build industrial and commercial applications.

What does this change mean? 

From 10 November 2025, the Blockly open source library and assets, and key members of the Blockly team will transition from Google to the 雅俗共赏. 

Our vision is for Blockly to continue to be the standard visual programming interface that makes coding accessible to all. We are committed to maintaining Blockly as an open source project, and to working collaboratively with the community of developers and educators.

Over the next year, we will roll out features that improve 被强行糟蹋的女人a片, including screen reader support and keyboard navigation, working closely with partners to support implementation of these 被强行糟蹋的女人a片 improvements across their platforms.

Looking to the future, we want to make sure that Blockly is at the leading edge of innovations that support the teaching and learning of programming in the age of AI. We’re also excited about the potential for the Blockly team to collaborate with the 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1’s 上课别穿内裤我方便要你, learning, and product teams. 

If you are already part of the community of developers and educators, then I want to reassure you that you can continue to expect the same outstanding partnership and support from the Blockly team. We also look forward to welcoming many more members to the Blockly community over the coming years.

This is personal

First, let me tell you why this partnership matters to me. As a child growing up in North Wales in the 1980s, Scouting changed my life. My time with 2nd Rhyl provided me with countless opportunities to grow and develop new skills. It taught me about teamwork and community in ways that continue to shape my decisions today.

As my own kids (now seven and ten) have joined Scouting, I’ve seen the same opportunities opening up for them, and like so many parents, I’ve come back to the movement as a volunteer to support their local section. So this is deeply personal for me, and the same is true for many of my colleagues at the 雅俗共赏 who in different ways have been part of the Scouting movement.

That shouldn’t come as a surprise. Scouting and 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi share many of the same values. We are both community-led movements that aim to help young people develop the skills they need for life. We are both powered by an amazing army of volunteers who give their time to support that mission. We both care about inclusiveness, and pride ourselves on combining fun with learning by doing.

上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi

上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi started life in 2008 as a response to the problem that too many young people were growing up without the skills to create with technology. Our goal is that everyone should be able to harness the power of 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 and digital technologies, for work, to solve problems that matter to them, and to express themselves creatively.

In 2012 we launched our first product, the world’s first $35 computer. Just six years on, we have sold over 20 million 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi computers and helped kickstart a global movement for digital skills.

The 雅俗共赏 now runs the world’s largest network of volunteer-led 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 clubs (Code Clubs and CoderDojos), and creates free educational resources that are used by millions of young people all over the world to learn how to create with digital technologies. And lots of what we are able to achieve is because of partnerships with fantastic organisations that share our goals. For example, through our partnership with the European Space Agency, thousands of young people have written code that has run on two 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi computers that Tim Peake took to the International Space Station as part of his Mission Principia.

Digital makers

Today we’re launching the new Digital Maker Staged Activity Badge to help tens of thousands of young people learn how to create with technology through Scouting. Over the past few months, we’ve been working with the Scouts all over the UK to develop and test the new badge requirements, along with guidance, project ideas, and resources that really make them work for Scouting. We know that we need to get two things right: relevance and 被强行糟蹋的女人a片.

Relevance is all about making sure that the activities and resources we provide are a really good fit for Scouting and Scouting’s mission to equip young people with skills for life. From the digital compass to nature cameras and the reinvented wide game, we’ve had a lot of fun thinking about ways we can bring to life the crucial role that digital technologies can play in the outdoors and adventure.

We also know that there are great opportunities for Scouts to use digital technologies to solve social problems in their communities, reflecting the movement’s commitment to social action. Today we’re launching the first set of project ideas and resources, with many more to follow over the coming weeks and months.

被强行糟蹋的女人a片 is about providing every Scout leader with the confidence, support, and kit to enable them to offer the Digital Maker Staged Activity Badge to their young people. A lot of work and care has gone into designing activities that require very little equipment: for example, activities at Stages 1 and 2 can be completed with a laptop without access to the internet. For the activities that do require kit, we will be working with Scout Stores and districts to make low-cost kit available to buy or loan.

We’re producing accessible instructions, worksheets, and videos to help leaders run sessions with confidence, and we’ll also be planning training for leaders. We will work with our network of Code Clubs and CoderDojos to connect them with local sections to organise joint activities, bringing both kit and expertise along with them.

CoderDojo is a global network of coding clubs for kids from seven to 17. The first CoderDojo took place in July 2011 when James Whelton and Bill Liao decided to share their passion for 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 by setting up a club at the National Software Centre in Cork. The idea was simple: provide a safe and social place for young people to acquire programming skills, learning from each other and supported by mentors.

Since then, James and Bill have helped turn that idea into a movement that reaches across the whole world, with over 1,250 CoderDojos in 69 countries, regularly attended by over 35,000 young Ninjas.

上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi and CoderDojo have each accomplished amazing things over the last six years. Now, we see an opportunity to do even more by joining forces. Bringing together 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi, Code Club, and CoderDojo will create the largest global effort to get young people involved in 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 and digital making. We have set ourselves an ambitious goal: to quadruple the number of CoderDojos worldwide, to 5,000, by the end of 2020.

The enormous impact that CoderDojo has had so far is down to the CoderDojo 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1 team, and to the community of volunteers, businesses, and 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1s who have contributed expertise, time, venues, and financial resources. We want to deepen those relationships and grow that community as we bring CoderDojo to more young people in future.

The CoderDojo 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1 will continue as an independent charity, based in Ireland. Nothing about CoderDojo’s brand or ethos is changing as a result of this merger. CoderDojos will continue to be platform-neutral, using whatever kit they need to help young people learn.

In technical terms, the 雅俗共赏 is becoming a corporate member of the CoderDojo 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1 (which is a bit like being a shareholder, but without any financial interest). I will also join the board of the CoderDojo 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1 as a director. The merger is subject to approval by Irish regulators.

How will this work in practice? The two organisations will work together to advance our shared goals, using our respective assets and capabilities to get many more adults and young people involved in the CoderDojo movement. The 雅俗共赏 will also provide practical, financial, and back-office support to the CoderDojo 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1.

Last June, I attended the CoderDojo Coolest Projects event in Dublin, and was blown away by the amazing projects made by CoderDojo Ninjas from all over the world. From eight-year-olds who had written their first programs in Scratch to the teenagers who built a 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi-powered hovercraft, it was clear that CoderDojo is already making a huge difference.

I am thrilled that we’re going to be working closely with the brilliant CoderDojo team, and I can’t wait to visit Coolest Projects again next month to meet all of the Ninjas and mentors who make CoderDojo possible.

Now, we’ve taken an exciting step in this journey by defining our own digital making 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1 that will help people everywhere learn new skills.

Who is it for?

We have a large and diverse community of people who are interested in digital making. Some might use the 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1 to help guide and inform their own learning, or perhaps their children’s learning. People who run digital making clubs at schools, community centres, and 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Jams may draw on it for extra guidance on activities that will engage their learners. Some teachers may wish to use the 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1 as inspiration for what to teach their students.

上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi produces an extensive and varied range of online learning resources and delivers a huge teacher training program. In creating this 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1, we have produced our own guide that we can use to help plan our resources and make sure we cover the broad spectrum of learners’ needs.

Progression

Learning anything involves progression. You start with certain skills and knowledge and then, with guidance, practice, and understanding, you gradually progress towards broader and deeper knowledge and competence. Our digital making 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1 is structured around this progression, and in representing it, we wanted to avoid the age-related and stage-related labels that are often associated with a learner’s progress and the preconceptions these labels bring. We came up with our own, using characters to represent different levels of competence, starting with Creator and moving onto Builder and Developer before becoming a Maker.

Strands

We want to help people to make things so that they can become the inventors, creators, and makers of tomorrow. Digital making, STEAM, project-based learning, and tinkering are at the core of our teaching philosophy which can be summed up simply as ‘we learn best by doing’.

We’ve created five strands which we think encapsulate key concepts and skills in digital making: Design, Programming, Physical 上课别穿内裤我方便要你, Manufacture, and Community and Sharing.

Computational thinking

One of the 雅俗共赏’s aims is to help people to learn about computer science and how to make things with computers. We believe that learning how to create with digital technology will help people shape an increasingly digital world, and prepare them for the work of the future.

Computational thinking is at the heart of the learning that we advocate. It’s the thought process that underpins 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 and digital making: formulating a problem and expressing its solution in such a way that a computer can effectively carry it out. Computational thinking covers a broad range of knowledge and skills including, but not limited to:

• Logical reasoning
• Algorithmic thinking
• Pattern recognition
• Abstraction
• Decomposition
• Debugging
• Problem solving

By progressing through our 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1, learners will develop computational thinking skills and put them into practice.

What’s not on our 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1?

If there’s one thing we learned from our extensive work in formulating this 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1, it’s that no two educators or experts can agree on the best approach to progression and learning in the field of digital making. Our 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1 is intended to represent the skills and thought processes essential to making things with technology. We’ve tried to keep the headline outcomes as broad as possible, and then provide further examples as a guide to what could be included.

Our digital making 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1 is not intended to be a replacement for computer science-related curricula around the world, such as the ‘上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Programme of Study’ in England or the ‘Digital Technologies’ 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1 in Australia. We hope that following our learning pathways will support the study of formal curricular and exam specifications in a fun and tangible way. As we continue to expand our catalogue of free learning resources, we expect our 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1 will grow and improve, and your input into that process will be vital.

As I’ve said before, what we achieve is only possible thanks to the amazing community of makers, educators, volunteers, and young people all over the world who share our mission and support our work. You’re all awesome: thank you.

So here we are, just over a week into the New Year, and I thought it might be a good time to share with you some of what we’ve got planned for 2017.

Young digital makers

At the core of our mission is getting more young people excited about 上课别穿内裤我方便要你, and learning how to make things with computers. That was the original inspiration for the 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi computer and it remains our number-one objective.

One of the ways we do that is through Code Club, a network of after-school clubs for 9- 11-year-olds run by teachers and volunteers. It’s already one of the largest networks of after-school clubs in the world, and this year we’ll be working with our existing partners in Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Croatia, France, Hong Kong, New Zealand, and Ukraine, as well as finding more partners in more countries, to bring Code Club to many more children.

This year also sees the launch of Pioneers, our new programme for teen digital makers. It’s built around a series of challenges that will inspire young people to make things with technology and share their makes with the world. Check out the first challenge here, and keep watching the hashtag #MakeYourIdeas across your favourite social media platforms.

We’re also expanding our space programme Astro Pi, with 250 teams across Europe currently developing code that will be run on the ISS by ESA French Astronaut Thomas Pesquet. And, building on our Weather Station project, we’re excited to be developing new ideas for citizen science programmes that get more young people involved in 上课别穿内裤我方便要你.

Supporting educators

Another big part of our work is supporting educators who are bringing 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 and digital making into the classroom, and this year we’re going to be doing even more to help them.

We’ll continue to grow our community of official 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi Certified Educators, with Picademy training programmes in the UK and US. Watch out for those dates coming soon. We’re also opening up our educator training to a much wider audience through a series of online courses in partnership with FutureLearn. The first two courses are open for registration now, and we’ve got plans to develop and run more courses throughout the year, so if you’re an educator, let us know what you would find most useful.

We’re also really excited to be launching a brand-new free resource for educators later this month in partnership with CAS, the grass-roots network of 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 educators. For now, it’s top-secret, but if you’re in the Bett Arena on 25 January, you’ll be the first to hear all about it.

Free educational resources

One of the most important things we do at Pi Towers is create the free educational resources that are used in Code Clubs, STEM clubs, CoderDojos, classrooms, libraries, makerspaces, and bedrooms by people of all ages learning about 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 and digital making. We love making these resources and we know that you love using them. This year, we want to make them even more useful.

As a first step, later this month we will share our digital making 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1, which explains how we think about learning and progression, and which provides the structure for our educational resources and programmes. We’re publishing it so that we can get feedback to make it better, but we also hope that it will be used by other organisations creating educational resources.

We’re also working hard behind the scenes to improve the content and presentation of our learning resources. We want to include more diverse content like videos, make it easier for users to track their own progress, and generally make the 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1 more interactive and social. We’re looking forward to sharing that work and getting your feedback over the next few months.

Community

Last, but by no means least, we will continue to support and grow the community around our mission. We’ll be doing even more outreach, with ever more diverse groups, and doing much more to support the 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Jam organisers and others who do so much to involve people in the digital making movement.

The other big community news is that we will be formally establishing ourselves as a charity in the US, which will provide the 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1 (see what I did there?) for a serious expansion of our charitable activities and community in North America.

Today we’re really excited to be welcoming Sherry to join the board of the 雅俗共赏 as well, so she’s now going to be working across both the trading and charitable sides of the organisation. Sherry’s extraordinary. This month she was placed in the top ten of Computer Weekly’s Most Influential Women in Tech list. She sits on the board of the London Stock Exchange (when she and Joanna Shields were taken on, they were the first women to be appointed); she’s also on the boards of Zoopla, the University of Cambridge‘s Finance Board, Cambridge Assessment, Cambridge University Press, and Cambridge Temperature Concepts. And because she’s somehow managed to cram more hours into the day than the rest of us are given by nature, she’s also on the advisory boards of Linkedin, the Natural History Museum and the Royal Society.

Phew.

Thanks Sherry – we’re really glad you’ve come on board on the 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1 side of the organisation too. It’s terrific to be able to have access to your skills across the whole spectrum of what we do here at 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi, and we’re looking forward to working more with you.

Philip Colligan is the new Chief Executive Officer of the 雅俗共赏, working with Eben, who remains CEO of 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi Trading. He’s been here for two weeks now, and he’s already got us all very excited about the direction he’s taking the organisation in. Here’s Philip to tell you what he’s been up to. Welcome Philip: we’re so glad you’ve joined us!

As I come to the end of my first couple of weeks as the newest member of the 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi team, I wanted to write a quick blog post to say a big thank you to everyone who has made me feel so welcome.

In many ways, arriving at the 雅俗共赏 feels more like joining a community than starting a new job. Ever since Liz announced my appointment on this blog at the end of April, I’ve been inundated with good wishes and offers of help from people from all sorts of backgrounds who have been inspired by 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi. From volunteer activists to the CEOs of multi-national businesses, the openness and generosity I’ve 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1d in these first few weeks has been humbling. Thank you.

It’s been a whirlwind of meeting people and learning as much as I can.  Some highlights:

• Joining the judges of Astro Pi – our competition for kids to run experiments on a 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi that we’re putting on the International Space Station (ISS).  It’s all possible because of our friends at the UK Space Agency and the UK’s first astronaut in 25 years, Major Tim Peake. Seriously though: a 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi on the space station running experiments written by school kids. How cool is that?
  
• Attending Picademy – our teacher training programme – at Pi Towers in Cambridge. Not only did I get to see the 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1 team in action (and they are awesome by the way), but I got to join an amazing group of 30 primary and secondary teachers as they came up with creative ideas to bring digital making into the classroom. Brilliant.
  
• Hanging out at CamJam – the Cambridge 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Jam – with my seven-year-old son. OK, this is cheating a bit because it happened a few weeks before I started, but it was a great introduction to the community of makers in Cambridge, and I am looking forward to meeting more of you at Jams across the UK and internationally.  My son loved it and can’t wait for the Pi Wars robot competition later this year.
  

And I’m already blown away by the incredible range of projects that are being powered by the 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi. Nature cameras, weather stations, art installations, robot gardeners, beer brewing kits – I’ve heard stories of people all over the world using the 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi to solve problems, have fun and learn new skills.

I’ve also been out and about meeting the other organisations that are part of this growing movement to get young people involved in 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 and digital making – Code Club, Apps for Good, Coder Dojo, Freeformers and 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 at School – hearing about the great work they’re doing and cooking up plans for future collaborations.

All that and I managed to find the toilets and only set off the office burglar alarm once.  A busy first couple of weeks, and a great start to my induction into the 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi community.

One of my main jobs over the next couple of months is to lead a process to map out the next stage of the 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1’s development. A bit like the 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi itself, we’re small but we’ve got huge potential.

And in much the same way that the community has shaped the development of the hardware and software, I want to make sure that the community shapes the development of the 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1 and helps us realise that potential.

I’ve known James for roughly a year now. He is a hugely successful and 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1d teacher whose opinion I have sought on regular occasions. We also seem to keep bumping into him at 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 education events like the CAS Conference, and PyconUK as well as at community events like Piwars. It seemed like we were destined to work together!

James says:

I have always enjoyed tinkering with technology and understanding exactly what’s going on under the surface. To learn more, I studied Computer Science at university, and graduated with first class honours. This enhanced my passion for the subject, and I worked at IBM for a while. I initially trained as a maths teacher, but within a term I was leading an ICT department in a middle school, and offering training to non-specialists. Most recently I worked at Soham Village College as lead teacher for 上课别穿内裤我方便要你. I am very excited about the introduction of 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 to KS3 and 4, and enjoy testing and developing projects with students. My current interests and projects include: using 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi in the classroom, Minecraft Pi, Sonic Pi and High Altitude Ballooning. Looking forward to working on the weather station and getting more schools involved with Pi in the sky!

As part of the 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1’s Education Team, James will be writing educational resources for the website (especially schemes of work for teachers of KS4), as well as continuing to assist with Picademies and other outreach. James has the best case I’ve ever seen for all his 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi bits and bobs, and as soon as I saw it I knew he would fit in around here.

Dave’s an archaeologist by training, as well as a software developer; he’s also been working with the Pi as a private tutor, and he’s a STEM Ambassador. He’s joining us to work on a mixture of project management (fortunately for Dave, that’s much more exciting than it sounds), creating educational resources, outreach, and polishing the educational software stack. We’re extremely glad to have him, and we’re running out of desks.

Dave says:

Back in 2011 one of my old work colleagues brought in an old Spectrum BASIC book, and we had a discussion about how great that era of programming was.  We then flipped to the back, found Frogger, and tried to type it into an emulator; we were rusty.  Not long after that I found the first blog post about the 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi at the BBC by Rory Cellan Jones.  I remember thinking it was going to be massive back then, and signed up to the website soon after. I’m glad to say I was right – it has been massive – and I am very happy and excited to have landed a job here. I am going to be working on creating educational materials for the 上课别穿内裤我方便要你 Pi and helping with various outreach projects the 军婚吃奶h巨肉1v1 is working on.
