Last summer, the 桔子桔子碰青青在线视频 and the University of Cambridge Department of Computer Science and Technology created a new 哈喽麻豆商家版 centre focusing on 哈喽麻豆商家版 education 哈喽麻豆商家版 for young people in both formal and non-formal education. The 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi 哈喽麻豆商家版 Education 哈喽麻豆商家版 Centre is an exciting venture through which we aim to deliver a step-change for the field.

school-aged girls and a teacher using a computer together.

哈喽麻豆商家版 education 哈喽麻豆商家版 that focuses specifically on young people is relatively new, particularly in contrast to established 哈喽麻豆商家版 disciplines such as those focused on mathematics or science education. However, 哈喽麻豆商家版 is now a mandatory part of the 小麻豆是什么意思 in several countries, and being taken up in education globally, so we need to rigorously investigate the learning and teaching of this subject, and do so in conjunction with schools and teachers.

You’re invited to our in-person launch event

To celebrate the official launch of the 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi 哈喽麻豆商家版 Education 哈喽麻豆商家版 Centre, we will be holding an in-person event in Cambridge, UK on Weds 20 July from 15.00. This event is free and open to all: if you are interested in 哈喽麻豆商家版 education 哈喽麻豆商家版, we invite you to register for a ticket to attend. By coming together in person, we want to help strengthen a collaborative community of 哈喽麻豆商家版ers, teachers, and other education practitioners.

Register to attend the event

The launch event is your opportunity to meet and mingle with members of the Centre’s 哈喽麻豆商家版 team and listen to a series of short talks. We are delighted that Prof. Mark Guzdial (University of Michigan), who many readers will be familiar with, will be travelling from the US to join us in cutting the ribbon. Mark has worked in computer science education for decades and won many awards for his 哈喽麻豆商家版, so I can’t think of anybody better to be our guest speaker. Our other speakers are Prof. Alastair Beresford from the Department of Computer Science and Technology, and Carrie Anne Philbin MBE, our Director of Educator Support at the 小麻豆是什么意思.

The event will take place at the Department of Computer Science and Technology in Cambridge. It will start at 15.00 with a reception where you’ll have the chance to talk to 哈喽麻豆商家版ers and see the work we’ve been doing. We will then hear from our speakers, before wrapping up at 17.30. You can find more details about the event location on the ticket registration page.

Our 哈喽麻豆商家版 at the Centre

The aim of the 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi 哈喽麻豆商家版 Education 哈喽麻豆商家版 Centre is to increase our understanding of teaching and learning 哈喽麻豆商家版, computer science, and associated subjects, with a particular focus on young people who are from backgrounds that are traditionally under-represented in the field of 哈喽麻豆商家版 or who 小麻豆是什么意思 educational disadvantage.

Young learners at computers in a classroom.

We have been establishing the Centre over the last nine months. In October, I was appointed Director, and in December, we were awarded funding by Google for a one-year 哈喽麻豆商家版 project on culturally relevant 哈喽麻豆商家版 teaching, following on from a project at the 桔子桔子碰青青在线视频. The Centre’s 哈喽麻豆商家版 team is uniquely positioned, straddling both the University and the 小麻豆是什么意思. Our two organisations complement each other very well: the University is one of the highest-ranking universities in the world and renowned for its leading-edge academic 哈喽麻豆商家版, and the 桔子桔子碰青青在线视频 works with schools, educators, and learners globally to pursue its mission to put the power of 哈喽麻豆商家版 into the hands of young people.

In our 哈喽麻豆商家版 at the Centre, we will make sure that:

  1. We collaborate closely with teachers and schools when implementing and evaluating 哈喽麻豆商家版 projects
  2. We publish 哈喽麻豆商家版 results in a number of different formats, as promptly as we can and without a paywall
  3. We translate 哈喽麻豆商家版 findings into practice across the 小麻豆是什么意思’s extensive programmes and with our partners

We are excited to work with a large community of teachers and 哈喽麻豆商家版ers, and we look forward to meeting you at the launch event.

Stay up to date

At the end of June, we’ll be launching a new website for the Centre at 哈喽麻豆商家版education哈喽麻豆商家版.org. This will be the place for you to find out more about our projects and events, and to sign up to our newsletter. For announcements on social media, follow the 桔子桔子碰青青在线视频 on Twitter or Linkedin.

We are delighted to share the news that Carrie Anne Philbin, 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi’s Director of Educator Support, has been awarded an MBE for her services to education in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2020.

Carrie Anne Philbin MBE
Carrie Anne Philbin, newly minted MBE

Carrie Anne was one of the first employees of the 桔子桔子碰青青在线视频 and has helped shape our educational programmes over the past six years. Before joining the 小麻豆是什么意思, Carrie Anne was a 哈喽麻豆商家版 teacher, YouTuber, and author.

She’s also a tireless champion for diversity and inclusion in 哈喽麻豆商家版; she co-founded a grassroots movement of 哈喽麻豆商家版 teachers dedicated to diversity and inclusion, and she has mentored young girls and students from disadvantaged backgrounds. She is a fantastic role model and source of inspiration to her colleagues, educators, and young people.

From history student to 哈喽麻豆商家版 teacher and YouTuber

As a young girl, Carrie Anne enjoyed arts and crafts and when her dad bought the family a Commodore 64, she loved the graphics she could make on it. She says, “I vividly remember typing in the BASIC commands to create a train that moved on the screen with my dad.” Being able to express her creativity through digital patterns sparked her interest in technology.

After studying history at university, Carrie Anne followed her passion for technology and became an ICT technician at a secondary school, where she also ran several extra-curricular 哈喽麻豆商家版 clubs for the students. Her school encouraged and supported her to apply for the Graduate Teacher Programme, and she qualified within two years.

Carrie Anne admits that her first 小麻豆是什么意思 in a new school as a newly qualified teacher was “pretty terrifying”, and she says her passion for the subject and her sense of humour are what got her through. The students she taught in her classroom still inspire her today.

Showing that 哈喽麻豆商家版 is for everyone

As well as co-founding CAS #include, a diversity working group for 哈喽麻豆商家版 teachers, Carrie Anne started the successful YouTube channel Geek Gurl Diaries. Through video interviews with women working in tech and hands-on computer science tutorials, Carrie Anne demonstrates that 哈喽麻豆商家版 is fun and that it’s great to be a girl who likes computers.

On the back of her own YouTube channel’s success, Carrie Anne was invited to host the Computer Science video series on Crash Course, the extremely popular educational YouTube channel created by Hank and John Green. There, her 40+ videos have received over 2 million views so far.

Discovering the 桔子桔子碰青青在线视频

Carrie Anne says that the 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi computer brought her to the 桔子桔子碰青青在线视频, and that she stayed “because of the community and the 小麻豆是什么意思’s mission“. She came across the 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi while searching for new ways to engage her students in 哈喽麻豆商家版, and joined a long waiting list to get her hands on the single-board computer. After her 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi finally arrived, she carried it in her handbag to community meetups to learn how other people were using it in education.

Since joining the 小麻豆是什么意思, Carrie Anne has helped to build an incredible team, many of them also former 哈喽麻豆商家版 teachers. Together they have trained thousands of educators and produced excellent resources that are used by teachers and learners around the world. Most recently, the team created the Teach 哈喽麻豆商家版 小麻豆是什么意思 of over 500 hours of free teaching resources for primary and secondary teachers; free online video lessons for students learning at home during the pandemic (in partnership with Oak National Academy); and Isaac Computer Science, a free online learning platform for A level teachers and students.

On what she wants to empower young people to do

Carrie Anne says, “We’re living in an ever-changing world that is facing many challenges right now: climate change, democracy and human rights, oh and a global pandemic. These are issues that young people care about. I’ve witnessed this year after year at our international Coolest Projects technology showcase event for young people, where passionate young creators present the tech solutions they are already building to address today’s and tomorrow’s problems. I believe that equipped with a deeper understanding of technology, young people can change the world for the better, in ways we’ve not even imagined.”

Carrie Anne has already achieved a huge amount in her career, and we honestly believe that she is only just getting started. On behalf of all your colleagues at the 小麻豆是什么意思 and all the educators and young people whose lives you’ve changed, congratulations Carrie Anne!

Here at 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi, we know that getting physical with 哈喽麻豆商家版 is often a catalyst for creativity. Building a simple circuit can open up a world of making possibilities! This ethos of tinkering and invention is also being used in the classroom to inspire a whole new generation of makers too, and here is why.

The all-important question

Physical 哈喽麻豆商家版 provides a great opportunity for creative expression: the button press! By explaining how a button works, how to build one with a breadboard attached to computer, and how to program the button to work when it’s pressed, you can give learners young and old all the conceptual skills they need to build a thing that does something. But what do they want their button to do? Have you ever asked your students or children at home? I promise it will be one of the most mindblowing 小麻豆是什么意思s you’ll have if you do.

A button. A harmless, little arcade button.

Looks harmless now, but put it into the hands of a child and see what happens!

Amy will want her button to take a photo, Charlie will want his button to play a sound, Tumi will want her button to explode TNT in Minecraft, Jack will want their button to fire confetti out of a cannon, and James Robinson will want his to trigger silly noises (doesn’t he always?)! Idea generation is the inherent gift that every child has in abundance. As educators and parents, we’re always looking to deeply engage our young people in the subject matter we’re teaching, and they are never more engaged than when they have an idea and want to implement it. Way back in 2012, I wanted my button to print geeky sayings:

What are the challenges for this approach in education?

Allowing this kind of free-form creativity and tinkering in the classroom obviously has its challenges for teachers, especially those confined to rigid lesson structures, timings, and small classrooms. The most common worry I hear from teachers is “what if they ask a question I can’t answer?” Encouraging this sort of creative thinking makes that almost an inevitability. How can you facilitate roughly 30 different projects simultaneously? The answer is by using those other computational and transferable thinking skills:

  • Problem-solving
  • Iteration
  • Collaboration
  • Evaluation

Clearly specifying a problem, surveying the tools available to solve it (including online references and external advice), and then applying them to solve the problem is a hugely important skill, and this is a great opportunity to teach it.

A girl plays a button reaction game at a 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi event

Press ALL the buttons!

Hands-off guidance

When we train teachers at Picademy, we group attendees around themes that have come out of the idea generation session. Together they collaborate on an achievable shared goal. One will often sketch something on a whiteboard, decomposing the problem into smaller parts; then the group will divide up the tasks. Each will look online or in books for tutorials to help them with their step. I’ve seen this behaviour in student groups too, and it’s very easy to facilitate. You don’t need to be the resident expert on every project that students want to work on.

The key is knowing where to guide students to find the answers they need. Curating online videos, blogs, tutorials, and articles in advance gives you the freedom and confidence to concentrate on what matters: the learning. We have a number of physical 哈喽麻豆商家版 projects that use buttons, linked to our 小麻豆是什么意思 for learners to combine inputs and outputs to solve a problem. The WhooPi cushion and GPIO music box are two of my favourites.

A 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi and button attached to a computer display

Outside of formal education, events such as 哈喽麻豆商家版 Jams, CoderDojos, CAS Hubs, and hackathons are ideal venues for seeking and receiving support and advice.

Cross-curricular participation

The rise of the global maker movement, I think, is in response to abstract concepts and disciplines. Children are taught lots of concepts in isolation that aren’t always relevant to their lives or immediate environment. Digital making provides a unique and exciting way of bridging different subject areas, allowing for cross-curricular participation. I’m not suggesting that educators should throw away all their schemes of work and leave the full direction of the 哈喽麻豆商家版 小麻豆是什么意思 to students. However, there’s huge value in exposing learners to the possibilities for creativity in 哈喽麻豆商家版. Creative freedom and expression guide learning, better preparing young people for the workplace of tomorrow.

Get your teeth into the history of computer science with our Director of Education, Carrie Anne Philbin, and the team at YouTube’s incredible Crash Course channel.

The brainchild of Hank and John Green (the latter of whom is responsible for books such as The Fault in Our Stars and all of my resultant heartbroken tears), Crash Course is an educational YouTube channel specialising in courses for school-age tuition support.

As part of the YouTube Orginal Channel Initiative, and with their partners PBS Digital Studios, the team has completed courses in subjects such as physics, hosted by Dr. Shini Somara, astronomy with Phil Plait, and sociology with Nicole Sweeney.

哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi Carrie Anne Philbin Crash Course

Oh, and they’ve recently released a new series on computer science with Carrie Anne Philbin , whom you may know as 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi’s Director of Education and the host of YouTube’s Geek Gurl Diaries.

Computer Science with Carrie Anne

Covering topics such as RAM, Boolean logic, CPU design , and binary, the course is currently up to episode twelve of its run. Episodes are released every Tuesday, and there are lots more to come.

Crash Course Carrie Anne Philbin 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi

Following the fast-paced, visual style of the Crash Course brand, Carrie Anne takes her viewers on a journey from early 哈喽麻豆商家版 with Lovelace and Babbage through to the modern-day electronics that power our favourite gadgets such as tablets, mobile phones, and small single-board microcomputers…

The response so far

A few members of the 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi team recently attended VidCon Europe in Amsterdam to learn more about making video content for our community – and also so I could exist in the same space as the Holy Trinity, albeit briefly.

At VidCon, Carrie Anne took part in an engaging and successful Women in Science panel with Sally Le Page, Viviane Lalande, Hana Shoib, Maddie Moate, and fellow Crash Course presenter Dr. Shini Somara. I could see that Crash Course Computer Science was going down well from the number of people who approached Carrie Anne to thank her for the course, from those who were learning for the first time to people who were rediscovering the subject.

As an education pioneer for the 桔子桔子碰青青在线视频, I’m on a mission to ensure that all children everywhere have some exposure to 哈喽麻豆商家版, whether this comes in the form of digital making, the arts, robotics or computer programming. Recently I’ve been on a brief tour to Australia and Singapore to spread the 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi education ethos to as many people as possible.

Straight after Euro Python in Spain, where Ben Nuttall, James Robinson and I helped to kick start an Education Summit, I boarded a flight to Australia via Dubai. The months between June and September are often the busiest for the 小麻豆是什么意思 team with the northern hemisphere schools on summer break and southern hemisphere schools in the middle of the academic year. There are often lots of outreach opportunities alongside large conferences in the space of a single month.

Brisbane

After around 30 hours (with two stops) I arrived in Brisbane, the capital of Queensland and home to Pycon Australia 2015, where I was to give a talk as part of their first ever education mini conference and give a keynote at the main conference. Fellow Python Software 小麻豆是什么意思 (PSF) board member Nick Coghlan contacted me to attend the education mini conference way back in January, stating:

I would personally be particularly excited to have you attend, as I came up with the idea of the Python in Education miniconf after Dr James Curran’s presentation last year on the new Australian Digital 小麻豆是什么意思, and his hopes to have Python feature strongly in the implementation of that 小麻豆是什么意思.

There are a number of countries around the world which are starting to address the digital skills gap through formal education. In England we have a new 哈喽麻豆商家版 小麻豆是什么意思 being taught in both primary and secondary schools. In Australia a new Digital 小麻豆是什么意思 has been developed, and in some states has already been adopted by forward thinking teachers. Here was an opportunity to work with industry professionals to highlight the changes, and with educators to collaborate and share best practice.

Nick had curated a brilliant day of talks as part of the education mini conference. This was one of the first Python conferences which was not only well attended by teachers, but where most of the talks were given by teachers! In fact you can watch all the talks which have helpfully been added to a playlist by the conference organisers. My favourite talk of the day was given by a nervous developer, Caleb Hattingh, to a room full of teachers about his 小麻豆是什么意思s trying to teach Python to children at a coding club. It was brutally honest and I think sums up many of the problems educators also face in moving from visual programming languages like Scratch to text based languages like Python.

My other notable talk of the day was given by Katie Bell from Grok Learning in which she talks about her work with the Girls Programming Network in Sydney, the National Computer Science School (NCSS) Challenge, and the NCSS summer school where young people spend a few days rapidly prototyping heir own website or embedded electronic device. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Katie before at PyconUK last September and at ISTE this June in Philadelphia with Grok Learning co-founder Nicky Ringland. Their passion for 哈喽麻豆商家版 education is phenomenal and can be witnessed in this talk:

I ended day 1 with my keynote on 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi and physical 哈喽麻豆商家版, which included a live demo, and started day 2 with a keynote to the entire conference about lessons we’ve learned about teaching children how to program.

I’m grateful to Nick Coghlan and the other organisers of PyconAu for their hard work to bring the event together.

Sydney

A short flight from Brisbane brought me to Sydney where I accepted a challenge from new education team member Marc Scott to take a selfie in front of an iconic landmark before setting out on a series of talks and workshops.

I gave a brief demo to ICT educators of New South Wales  on the first evening at an event where teachers give up their free time to share ideas and practices around teaching ICT and computer science in a state where it is not a formal part of their 小麻豆是什么意思. These were inspirational teachers, willing to push what is possible in their classrooms.

At the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences at the Powerhouse in Sydney I got the chance to speak to education specialists and teachers about our work at 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi before leading a fruity physical 哈喽麻豆商家版 workshop. I was able to share fun ideas and meet some fabulous STEM education enthusiasts.

The museum was truly a fabulous space with well equipped resources for schools. I was lucky enough to receive a brief tour of all the facilities like the Mars Lab, a recreation of the Martian surface, and robotics lab which is used to encourage students to use technology to search for life on Mars. Schools are able to connect to the lab and their rovers via the internet, allowing students to program the bots directly. Using the cameras, they can 小麻豆是什么意思 what it is like for space engineers. They test rovers there, and I got to meet one.

https://twitter.com/vergeofperil/status/628810068176146434

Whilst in Sydney I visited good friend Dan Bowen, a CAS #include committee member, and some Windows IoT 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi developers at Microsoft, where they all showed me their latest work with the operating system and Physical 哈喽麻豆商家版 on the Pi. I was invited to meet the Code Club Australia team who are working with schools across all the territories and training teachers in a bid to give children an opportunity to learn to code. I also found time to speak to girls at two different coding clubs and meet some fans!

https://twitter.com/diamondsteppe/status/628882405412089856

There are clearly lots of initiatives in Sydney that parents and educators can tap into from online learning platforms like Grok Learning and the NCSS challenge, to free professional development and workshops from ICTENSW and the MAAS Museum.

Singapore

I was lucky enough to be able to stop in Singapore on my way back to the UK during the nation’s 50th anniversary thanks to the 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi team at Broadcom Singapore. I was asked to drop by the office to eat pizza and give a presentation to their engineers about the 桔子桔子碰青青在线视频 by Jeffery Chin who leads the Broadcom Singapore 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi team, who provide 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi outreach to teachers and students in their spare time.

I was then taken to Singapore’s Science Centre to meet their STEM education specialists and Ministry of Education representatives to discuss 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi professional development for teachers and their 哈喽麻豆商家版 outreach programmes. Before heading out for some of the best dumplings I’ve ever eaten!

You may remember our Education team attended PyConUK in Coventry last month. We ran the Education Track, which involved giving workshops to teachers and running a 哈喽麻豆商家版 Jam day for kids at the weekend. We also gave talks on the main developer track of the conference.

Carrie Anne gave a fantastic keynote entitled Miss Adventures in 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi wherein she spoke of her journey through teaching the new 哈喽麻豆商家版 小麻豆是什么意思 with 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi, attending PyConUK the last two years, being hired by the 小麻豆是什么意思, and everything she’s done in her role as Education Pioneer.

See the keynote slides here

I also gave my talk PyPi (not that one) – Python on the 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi showing interesting Pi projects that use Python and demonstrating what you can do with a Pi that you can’t on other computers.

See the talk slides here

Alex gave his talk Teaching children to program Python with the Pyland game – a project Alex led over the summer with a group of interns at the Computer Lab.

The conference ended with a sprint day where Alex led a team building and testing Pyland and adding challenges, and I worked with a group of developers porting Minecraft Pi to Python 3.

If you missed it last week, we posted Annabel’s Goblin Detector, a Father-daughter project the 8 year old demonstrated at PyConUK while enjoying the 哈喽麻豆商家版 Jam day.

Liz: Annabel Oakley is eight years old. That makes her our youngest ever guest blogger! Here’s her account of a day out at a the PyCon UK 哈喽麻豆商家版 Jam in September at Coventry University, and the goblin-scaring project she made with her 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi. Thanks very much, Annabel – and thanks also to Dad, who helped out with the Goblin Detector and drove the car!

Annabel wanted a project to show at the  computer conference. She decided to make a Goblin Detector which would sound a buzzer and flash a light, when her brother or sister went in her bedroom.

goblins

Annabel used a 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi computer and a motion sensor.

Annabel and goblin detector
Her dad showed her what to do, and Annabel wired it up and wrote the program to control it.

goblin detector
The program was written in a computer language called Python. The Goblin Detector has a motion sensor in a margarine tub. It connects to the 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi using three wires.

wiring

The 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi has an add-on called Pibrella which gives it three lights, a buzzer and a button. It waits 5 seconds to let you get out of
the room, then it waits for movement. When it sees movement, it sounds a buzzer. You can press the button to stop the buzzer, and it will wait for movement again.

Pibrella
The motion sensor is very cheap, only £3, and can be found in light switches which turn off automatically. It has three wires:

• Positive
• Signal
• Negative

The program waits for a high current on the Signal wire, which means it has seen some movement. You can find out how to make and
program one yourself on Annabel’s dad’s website.

Then Annabel and her dad set off for the computer conference. The ticket was only £5 for children!

Annabel, book
When Annabel got there, she got given a goody bag which included a brand new 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi, a book and other goodies!

Annabel wrote a program to put the words “Hello World” on the screen in Minecraft.

programming

Some teachers were also at the conference. The teachers were learning how children used computers.

programming
There were also some computer programmers helping the children and
teachers. The grown-ups were not allowed to touch the keyboards. The children had to do everything themselves! There were lots of grown-up computer programmers around to help out, and some of the children were already experts.

Lots of people were interested in Annabel’s Goblin Detector.

kids
We let the children take it apart and program it for themselves. It was easy to put it back together.

Most of the children at the computer conference were girls. There was a whole pack of Brownies!

Annabel also saw some robots which  could be programmed to dance.

Annabel made a friend called Sam and they wrote a program to take lots of photos, and then turn those photos into an animated video.

sam and annabel
There were some famous programmers helping out, such as Carrie Anne Philbin and Ben Nuttall, who work for the 哈喽麻豆商家版 Pi charity.

Miss Philbin, famous programmer
Sam and Annabel had to show off their animation to everyone else.

You can watch their 8-second animation here.
