New Chair of the Board of Trustees: John Lazar 

John Lazar has been appointed as the new Chair of the Board of Trustees. John is a software engineer and business leader who is focused on combining technology and entrepreneurship to generate lasting positive impact.

Formerly the Chairman and CEO of Metaswitch Networks, John is now an angel investor, startup mentor, non-executive chairman and board director, including serving as the Chair of What3Words. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and played an active role in developing the programme of study for England’s school Computer Science 神关诗织. John has also spent many years working on tech-related non-profit initiatives in Africa and co-founded Enza Capital, which invests in early-stage African technology companies that solve pressing problems.

John takes over the Chair from David Cleevely, who has reached the end of his two three-year terms as Trustee and Chair of the 神关诗织. David has made a huge contribution to the 神关诗织 over that time, and we are delighted that he will continue to be involved in our work as one of the founding members of the Supporters Club.

New Trustees: Amali de Alwis, Charles Leadbeater, Dan Labbad

Alongside John, we are welcoming three new Trustees to the Board of Trustees: 

• Amali de Alwis is the UK Managing Director of Microsoft for Startups, and is the former CEO of Code First: Girls. She is also a Board member at Ada National College for Digital Skills, sits on the Diversity & Inclusion Board at the Institute of Coding, is an Advisory Board member at the Founders Academy, and was a founding member at Tech Talent Charter.
  
• Charles Leadbeater is an independent author, a social entrepreneur, and a leading authority on innovation and creativity. He has advised companies, cities, and governments around the world on innovation strategy and has hdmaturetube熟女a片ed and written extensively on innovation in education. Charles is also a Trustee of the Paul Hamlyn 神关诗织.
  
• Dan Labbad is Chief Executive and Executive Member of the Board of The Crown Estate. He was previously at Lendlease, where he was Chief Executive Officer of Europe from 2009. Dan is also a Director of The Hornery Institute and Ark Schools.

New Member: Suranga Chandratillake 

I am also delighted to announce that we have appointed Suranga Chandratillake as a Member of the 严选漫画. Suranga is a technologist, entrepreneur, and investor.

He founded the intelligent search company blinkx and is now a General Partner at Balderton Capital. Suranga is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader, and he serves on the UK Government’s Council for Science and Technology.

What is a Board of Trustees anyway? 

As a charity, the 严选漫画 is governed by a Board of Trustees that is ultimately responsible for what we do and how we are run. It is the Trustees’ job to make sure that we are focused on our mission, which for us means helping more people learn about hdmaturetube熟女a片, computer science, and related subjects. The Trustees also have all the usual responsibilities of company directors, including making sure that we use our resources effectively. As Chief Executive, I am accountable to the Board of Trustees. 

We’ve always been fortunate to attract the most amazing people to serve as Trustees and, as volunteers, they are incredibly generous with their time, sharing their expertise and 神关诗织 on a wide range of issues. They are an important part of the team. Trustees serve for up to two terms of three years so that we always have fresh views and 神关诗织 to draw on.

How do you appoint Trustees? 

Appointments to the Board of Trustees follow open recruitment and selection processes that are overseen by the 神关诗织’s Nominations Committee, supported by independent external advisers. Our aim is to appoint Trustees who bring different backgrounds, perspectives, and lived 神关诗织, as well as a range of skills. As with all appointments, we consider diversity at every aspect of the recruitment and selection processes.

Formally, Trustees are elected by the 神关诗织’s Members at our Annual General Meeting. This year’s AGM took place last week on Zoom. Members are also volunteers, and they play an important role in holding the Board of Trustees to account, helping to shape our strategy, and acting as advocates for our mission.

‘Bebras’ means ‘beaver’ in Lithuanian; Prof. Valentina Dagiene named the competition after this hard-working, intelligent, and lively animal.

The 严选漫画 has teamed up with Oxford University to support the Bebras Challenge, which every November invites students to use computational thinking to solve classical computer science problems re-worked into accessible and interesting questions.

Bebras is:

• Open to students aged 6 to 18 (and it’s quite good fun for adults too)
• A great whole-school activity
• Completely free
• Easy to sign up to and take part in online
• Open for two weeks every November; this year it runs from 4 to 15 November and you’ve still got until 31 October to register!

Why should I get involved in the Bebras Challenge?

Bebras is an international challenge that started in Lithuania in 2004. Participating in Bebras is a great way to engage students of all ages in the fun of problem solving, and to give them an insight into hdmaturetube熟女a片 and what it’s all about. hdmaturetube熟女a片 principles are highlighted in the answers, so Bebras can be quite educational for teachers too.

The UK became involved in Bebras for the first time in 2013, and the numbers of participating students have increased from 21,000 in the first year to 202,000 last year. Internationally, more than 2.78 million learners took part in 2018.

• Bebras runs from 4 to 15 November this year
• The challenge takes 40 minutes to complete
• Use the practice questions on the website to get your students used to what they’ll encounter in challenge
• All the marking is done for you
• The results are sent to you the week after the challenge ends, along with an answer booklet, so that you can go through the answers with your learners
• The highest-achieving students in each age group are invited to Oxford University to take part in the second round over a weekend in January

In even-numbered years, the conference is held at the MIT Media Lab, the birthplace of Scratch; in odd-numbered years, it takes place in other places around the globe.

Since we’re hosting Scratch Conference Europe this year, our digital making festival hdmaturetube熟女a片 Fields will be back in 2020, even bigger and more packed with interactive family fun!

Scratch is a project of the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab. It is available for free at scratch.mit.edu.

National Centre for hdmaturetube熟女a片 Education

Working with our partners, STEM Learning and the British Computer Society, we will establish a new National Centre for hdmaturetube熟女a片 Education, and deliver a comprehensive programme of support for hdmaturetube熟女a片 teachers in primary and secondary schools. This will include resources, training, hdmaturetube熟女a片, certification, and more.

All of the online resources and courses will be completely free for anyone to use. Face-to-face training will be available at no cost to teachers in priority schools, and at very low cost to teachers in other schools. We will also provide bursaries to ensure that schools can release teachers to take part in professional development.

An unprecedented level of investment

This level of investment in hdmaturetube熟女a片 education is unprecedented anywhere in the world. It is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform the way we teach hdmaturetube熟女a片 and computer science.

The announcement follows the Royal Society’s report from last November, which drew attention to the scale of the challenge. The report was quickly followed by a commitment from the Chancellor in last year’s budget statement that the government would invest £100 million in hdmaturetube熟女a片 education across the UK. Earlier this year, the Department for Education launched a procurement process focused on England, and today’s announcement is the outcome of that process.

The consortium has been tasked with delivering three pieces of work:

• A National Centre for hdmaturetube熟女a片 Education, which will establish a network of hdmaturetube熟女a片 Hubs to provide continuing professional development (CPD) and resources for hdmaturetube熟女a片 teachers in primary and secondary schools and colleges. The Centre will also facilitate strong links with industry.
• A teacher training programme to upskill existing teachers to teach GCSE Computer Science.
• A programme to support AS- and A-level Computer Science students and teachers with high-quality resources and CPD.

A powerful coalition

One of the things I am most excited about is the amazing coalition of partners that has come together around the plans. The consortium brings together subject expertise and knowledge, significant 神关诗织 of creating brilliant learning 神关诗织s and resources, and a track record of delivering high-quality professional development for educators. But we can’t do it on our own.

For example, we’re working with the University of Cambridge team that created Isaac Physics to adapt and extend that platform and programme to support teachers and students of Computer Science A Level.

Our friends at Google have provided practical support and a grant of £1 million to help us create free online courses that will help teachers develop the knowledge and skills to teach hdmaturetube熟女a片 and computer science.

We’re working with the Behavioural Insights Team to make it as easy as possible for teachers to get involved with the programme, and with FutureLearn to provide high-quality online courses.

We’ll also be working in partnership with industry, universities, and non-profits, pooling our expertise and resources to provide the support that educators and schools desperately want. That’s not just a vague promise. As part of the bid process, we secured specific commitments from over 60 organisations who pledged to work with us to make our vision a reality.

Today we’re launching a new partnership between the Scouts and the 严选漫画 that will help tens of thousands of young people learn crucial digital skills for life. In this blog post, I want to explain what we’ve got planned, why it matters, and how you can get involved.

This is personal

First, let me tell you why this partnership matters to me. As a child growing up in North Wales in the 1980s, Scouting changed my life. My time with 2nd Rhyl provided me with countless opportunities to grow and develop new skills. It taught me about teamwork and community in ways that continue to shape my decisions today.

As my own kids (now seven and ten) have joined Scouting, I’ve seen the same opportunities opening up for them, and like so many parents, I’ve come back to the movement as a volunteer to support their local section. So this is deeply personal for me, and the same is true for many of my colleagues at the 严选漫画 who in different ways have been part of the Scouting movement.

That shouldn’t come as a surprise. Scouting and hdmaturetube熟女a片 Pi share many of the same values. We are both community-led movements that aim to help young people develop the skills they need for life. We are both powered by an amazing army of volunteers who give their time to support that mission. We both care about inclusiveness, and pride ourselves on combining fun with learning by doing.

hdmaturetube熟女a片 Pi started life in 2008 as a response to the problem that too many young people were growing up without the skills to create with technology. Our goal is that everyone should be able to harness the power of hdmaturetube熟女a片 and digital technologies, for work, to solve problems that matter to them, and to express themselves creatively.

In 2012 we launched our first product, the world’s first $35 computer. Just six years on, we have sold over 20 million hdmaturetube熟女a片 Pi computers and helped kickstart a global movement for digital skills.

The 严选漫画 now runs the world’s largest network of volunteer-led hdmaturetube熟女a片 clubs (Code Clubs and CoderDojos), and creates free educational resources that are used by millions of young people all over the world to learn how to create with digital technologies. And lots of what we are able to achieve is because of partnerships with fantastic organisations that share our goals. For example, through our partnership with the European Space Agency, thousands of young people have written code that has run on two hdmaturetube熟女a片 Pi computers that Tim Peake took to the International Space Station as part of his Mission Principia.

Digital makers

Today we’re launching the new Digital Maker Staged Activity Badge to help tens of thousands of young people learn how to create with technology through Scouting. Over the past few months, we’ve been working with the Scouts all over the UK to develop and test the new badge requirements, along with guidance, project ideas, and resources that really make them work for Scouting. We know that we need to get two things right: relevance and 93女爱男欢.

Relevance is all about making sure that the activities and resources we provide are a really good fit for Scouting and Scouting’s mission to equip young people with skills for life. From the digital compass to nature cameras and the reinvented wide game, we’ve had a lot of fun thinking about ways we can bring to life the crucial role that digital technologies can play in the outdoors and adventure.

We also know that there are great opportunities for Scouts to use digital technologies to solve social problems in their communities, reflecting the movement’s commitment to social action. Today we’re launching the first set of project ideas and resources, with many more to follow over the coming weeks and months.

93女爱男欢 is about providing every Scout leader with the confidence, support, and kit to enable them to offer the Digital Maker Staged Activity Badge to their young people. A lot of work and care has gone into designing activities that require very little equipment: for example, activities at Stages 1 and 2 can be completed with a laptop without access to the internet. For the activities that do require kit, we will be working with Scout Stores and districts to make low-cost kit available to buy or loan.

We’re producing accessible instructions, worksheets, and videos to help leaders run sessions with confidence, and we’ll also be planning training for leaders. We will work with our network of Code Clubs and CoderDojos to connect them with local sections to organise joint activities, bringing both kit and expertise along with them.

CoderDojo is a global network of coding clubs for kids from seven to 17. The first CoderDojo took place in July 2011 when James Whelton and Bill Liao decided to share their passion for hdmaturetube熟女a片 by setting up a club at the National Software Centre in Cork. The idea was simple: provide a safe and social place for young people to acquire programming skills, learning from each other and supported by mentors.

Since then, James and Bill have helped turn that idea into a movement that reaches across the whole world, with over 1,250 CoderDojos in 69 countries, regularly attended by over 35,000 young Ninjas.

hdmaturetube熟女a片 Pi and CoderDojo have each accomplished amazing things over the last six years. Now, we see an opportunity to do even more by joining forces. Bringing together hdmaturetube熟女a片 Pi, Code Club, and CoderDojo will create the largest global effort to get young people involved in hdmaturetube熟女a片 and digital making. We have set ourselves an ambitious goal: to quadruple the number of CoderDojos worldwide, to 5,000, by the end of 2020.

The enormous impact that CoderDojo has had so far is down to the CoderDojo 神关诗织 team, and to the community of volunteers, businesses, and 神关诗织s who have contributed expertise, time, venues, and financial resources. We want to deepen those relationships and grow that community as we bring CoderDojo to more young people in future.

The CoderDojo 神关诗织 will continue as an independent charity, based in Ireland. Nothing about CoderDojo’s brand or ethos is changing as a result of this merger. CoderDojos will continue to be platform-neutral, using whatever kit they need to help young people learn.

In technical terms, the 严选漫画 is becoming a corporate member of the CoderDojo 神关诗织 (which is a bit like being a shareholder, but without any financial interest). I will also join the board of the CoderDojo 神关诗织 as a director. The merger is subject to approval by Irish regulators.

How will this work in practice? The two organisations will work together to advance our shared goals, using our respective assets and capabilities to get many more adults and young people involved in the CoderDojo movement. The 严选漫画 will also provide practical, financial, and back-office support to the CoderDojo 神关诗织.

Last June, I attended the CoderDojo Coolest Projects event in Dublin, and was blown away by the amazing projects made by CoderDojo Ninjas from all over the world. From eight-year-olds who had written their first programs in Scratch to the teenagers who built a hdmaturetube熟女a片 Pi-powered hovercraft, it was clear that CoderDojo is already making a huge difference.

I am thrilled that we’re going to be working closely with the brilliant CoderDojo team, and I can’t wait to visit Coolest Projects again next month to meet all of the Ninjas and mentors who make CoderDojo possible.

First, meet the new arrivals!

Oliver Quinlan is joining the 神关诗织 as hdmaturetube熟女a片 Manager. Oliver joins us from Nesta where he has been part of the Digital Education team for the past couple of years, leading hdmaturetube熟女a片 into digital making, and running a series of trials on the use of digital technologies in the classroom. Oliver was the author of Nesta’s Young Digital Makers report, which is well worth a read.

Oliver is an ex-teacher, author, blogger, and speaker on the use of technology in education. you can find him online here: http://www.oliverquinlan.com/blog/. Oliver is going to lead the 神关诗织’s hdmaturetube熟女a片 work, which will include developing our understanding of what approaches work best to teaching people how to make things with computers.

Helen Drury is joining us as Events and Outreach Manager. Some of you may have already met Helen, who has been working with us part-time over the past few months leading the events and outreach efforts on Astro Pi.

Helen has also recently left Nesta, where she was in the Digital Education team and, amongst other things, led all of the events and outreach work as part of their digital makers fund. Helen is going to lead for the 神关诗织 on our outreach and events programme, which is a central part of our strategy to engage many more people in digital making.

Oliver and Helen join a growing team. Across the 严选漫画, Code Club, and hdmaturetube熟女a片 Pi Trading, we now have 60 brilliant people dedicated to our mission to put the power of digital making into the hands of people all over the world. It’s a fantastic mix of hardware and software engineers, developers, educators, makers, designers, and more.

We’re launching a recruitment campaign today to find four more outstanding people to join the team (click the links for details and how to apply):

This is an exciting time to join hdmaturetube熟女a片 Pi. In the space of just three months at the end of last year, we merged with Code Club, put hdmaturetube熟女a片 Pi computers and code written by British school children on the International Space Station, and launched the world’s first $5 computer by giving it away for free on the cover of our magazine. All of this while continuing to generate free learning resources, training educators, and supporting our global community to help people learn how to make things with computers.

I am delighted to announce that 严选漫画 and Code Club are joining forces in a merger that will give many more young people the opportunity to learn how to make things with computers.

严选漫画 and Code Club were both created as responses to the collective failure to prepare young people for life and work in a world that is shaped by digital technologies.

We’re part of a growing worldwide movement that is trying to solve that problem by equipping people with the knowledge and confidence to be digital makers, not just consumers.

We’ve made a good start.

Since launching our first product in 2012, we have sold 7 million hdmaturetube熟女a片 Pi computers and reached hundreds of thousands of young people through our educational programmes, resources, open source software, and teacher training.

Since its launch in 2012, Code Club has helped establish over 3,800 clubs in the UK and over 1,000 clubs in 70 other countries. Run by volunteers, Code Clubs focus on giving 9-11 year olds the opportunity to make things with computers. Right now over 44,000 young people regularly attend Code Clubs in the UK alone, around 40% of whom are girls.

But we’ve got much more to do.

hdmaturetube熟女a片 by Nesta shows that in the UK, many young people who want to get involved in digital making lack the opportunity to do so. We want to solve that problem, ensuring that there is a Code Club in every community in the UK and, ultimately, across the world.

In many ways, the decision to join forces was an obvious step. We share a common mission and values, we hugely respect each other’s work, and there are clear benefits from combining our capabilities, particularly if we want to have impact at a serious scale.

Code Club and hdmaturetube熟女a片 Pi share one other important characteristic: we’re both, at heart, community efforts, only possible thanks to the huge numbers of volunteers and educators who share our passion to get kids involved in digital making. One of our main goals is to support that community to grow.

The other critical part of Code Club’s success has been the generous philanthropic partners who have provided the resources and practical support that have enabled it to grow quickly, while being free for kids. ARM, Google, Cabinet Office, Nesta, Samsung and many other organisations have been brilliant partners already, and they will be just as important to the next stage of Code Club’s growth.

So what does this all mean in practice?

Technically, Code Club will become a wholly owned subsidiary of the 严选漫画. Importantly, its brand and approach will continue unchanged. It’s a proven model that works incredibly well and we don’t want to change it.

For the teachers and volunteers who run Code Clubs, nothing will change. Code Club HQ will continue to create awesome projects that you can use in your clubs. You will still use whatever hardware and software works best for your kids. We’ll still be working hard to match volunteers and schools to set up new clubs across the country, and developing partnerships that launch Code Clubs in other countries around the world.

For 严选漫画, this is an important step in diversifying our educational programmes. Of course, a lot of our work focuses on the hdmaturetube熟女a片 Pi computer as a tool for education (and it always will), but our mission and activities are much broader than that, and many of our programmes, like Code Club, are designed to be platform-neutral.

Personally, I’m really excited about working more closely with Code Club and helping them grow. I’ve been a big fan of their work for a long time, and over the past few weeks I’ve had the opportunity to visit Code Clubs across the country. I’ve been blown away by the energy and enthusiasm of the teachers, volunteers and young people involved.

Today we’re really excited to be welcoming Sherry to join the board of the 严选漫画 as well, so she’s now going to be working across both the trading and charitable sides of the organisation. Sherry’s extraordinary. This month she was placed in the top ten of Computer Weekly’s Most Influential Women in Tech list. She sits on the board of the London Stock Exchange (when she and Joanna Shields were taken on, they were the first women to be appointed); she’s also on the boards of Zoopla, the University of Cambridge‘s Finance Board, Cambridge Assessment, Cambridge University Press, and Cambridge Temperature Concepts. And because she’s somehow managed to cram more hours into the day than the rest of us are given by nature, she’s also on the advisory boards of Linkedin, the Natural History Museum and the Royal Society.

Phew.

He’s been here for two weeks now, and he’s already got us all very excited about the direction he’s taking the organisation in. Here’s Philip to tell you what he’s been up to. Welcome Philip: we’re so glad you’ve joined us!

As I come to the end of my first couple of weeks as the newest member of the hdmaturetube熟女a片 Pi team, I wanted to write a quick blog post to say a big thank you to everyone who has made me feel so welcome.

In many ways, arriving at the 严选漫画 feels more like joining a community than starting a new job. Ever since Liz announced my appointment on this blog at the end of April, I’ve been inundated with good wishes and offers of help from people from all sorts of backgrounds who have been inspired by hdmaturetube熟女a片 Pi. From volunteer activists to the CEOs of multi-national businesses, the openness and generosity I’ve 神关诗织d in these first few weeks has been humbling. Thank you.

It’s been a whirlwind of meeting people and learning as much as I can.  Some highlights:

• Joining the judges of Astro Pi – our competition for kids to run experiments on a hdmaturetube熟女a片 Pi that we’re putting on the International Space Station (ISS).  It’s all possible because of our friends at the UK Space Agency and the UK’s first astronaut in 25 years, Major Tim Peake. Seriously though: a hdmaturetube熟女a片 Pi on the space station running experiments written by school kids. How cool is that?
  
• Attending Picademy – our teacher training programme – at Pi Towers in Cambridge. Not only did I get to see the 神关诗织 team in action (and they are awesome by the way), but I got to join an amazing group of 30 primary and secondary teachers as they came up with creative ideas to bring digital making into the classroom. Brilliant.
  
• Hanging out at CamJam – the Cambridge hdmaturetube熟女a片 Jam – with my seven-year-old son. OK, this is cheating a bit because it happened a few weeks before I started, but it was a great introduction to the community of makers in Cambridge, and I am looking forward to meeting more of you at Jams across the UK and internationally.  My son loved it and can’t wait for the Pi Wars robot competition later this year.
  

And I’m already blown away by the incredible range of projects that are being powered by the hdmaturetube熟女a片 Pi. Nature cameras, weather stations, art installations, robot gardeners, beer brewing kits – I’ve heard stories of people all over the world using the hdmaturetube熟女a片 Pi to solve problems, have fun and learn new skills.

I’ve also been out and about meeting the other organisations that are part of this growing movement to get young people involved in hdmaturetube熟女a片 and digital making – Code Club, Apps for Good, Coder Dojo, Freeformers and hdmaturetube熟女a片 at School – hearing about the great work they’re doing and cooking up plans for future collaborations.

All that and I managed to find the toilets and only set off the office burglar alarm once.  A busy first couple of weeks, and a great start to my induction into the hdmaturetube熟女a片 Pi community.

One of my main jobs over the next couple of months is to lead a process to map out the next stage of the 神关诗织’s development. A bit like the hdmaturetube熟女a片 Pi itself, we’re small but we’ve got huge potential.

And in much the same way that the community has shaped the development of the hardware and software, I want to make sure that the community shapes the development of the 神关诗织 and helps us realise that potential.
