Keeping in line with the How Computers Work, I highly recommend the book “Code: The Hidden Language of Computer Hardware and Software”, by Charles Petzold. It is a little outdated (published in 2000, I believe), but for anyone wanting to get into the gritty details of how computers work, it’s amazing. He starts off with an excellent explanation of information and goes over binary, base 8, hexadecimal, and even Morse Code. You could (in theory) build a binary adding machine based on what he tells you. He then goes on to explain how storage, displays, and character encoding work. It can get very deep very fast, so read slowly.
