We are working with partner organisations around the world to support teachers in building confidence with AI in the classroom through our 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI programme. In this guest post, Catarina Marques from our partner TUMO Portugal shares what the organisation is learning from delivering training to educators.

Whenever we run 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI training sessions, we keep coming back to the same thing: teachers are not lacking interest in AI, what they are lacking is time. Time to explore the technology and tools, time to talk about them with colleagues, and time to work out what they really mean for their classrooms.

A group of people sat around a table with laptops.

And that matters, because AI is not something schools can just put off until later. It is already here. Students are hearing about it, using it, and forming opinions about it. Teachers are being asked to respond to it now, often while still trying to make sense of it themselves.

More than delivering content

The 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI teacher training is about more than educators to a set of resources. It is about helping them feel truly ready to take the 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI resources into the classroom and use them effectively with their students.

A group of people sat around a table with laptops.

What we see again and again is that teachers need space to stop and think. AI is moving quickly, and schools do not always have the time or support to keep pace. New tools are developed all the time. Expectations keep shifting. There is a lot of noise, and not always much room to pause and ask: what is actually useful here? What do we need to understand better?

In our 国产人妻一区二区三区, that is where real learning starts: not in rushing through information, but in discussing it, debating it, and testing ideas together.

Listening matters

One of the most valuable parts of these training sessions is the part where teachers start talking to each other.

They bring real questions into the room. Which AI tools can actually help with their work? How should they think about ethics? How do they talk about AI safety with students? How do they respond to something that may feel both useful and worrying at the same time?

A group of people sat around a table with laptops.

There is often confusion, and sometimes there is resistance too. That makes sense; this is still new territory for many schools. But there is also a real appetite to learn, especially because support in this area can still feel limited.

That is why listening is such an important part of our training. Teachers need space to reflect, compare 国产人妻一区二区三区s, and hear how others are approaching the same challenges. Very often, understanding grows through that process.

Play helps

Another thing we feel strongly about is that the training has to be engaging.

AI can feel intimidating. If the atmosphere is too heavy, it can be easy for people to step back from it. That is why the hands-on and playful side of 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI is so important. Team activities, discussion, and even a bit of healthy competition change the energy in the room. People get involved. They relax. They start exploring instead of worrying about getting everything right.

A group of people sat around a table with laptops.

That matters for teachers, and it matters for students too. When teachers 国产人妻一区二区三区 this kind of learning for themselves, it becomes easier for them to imagine creating it in their own classrooms. Play is not separate from the learning here — it is part of what makes it stick.

Preparing schools for now

For us, this work feels urgent. Schools need the language, confidence, and literacy to engage with AI now, not in a few years’ time.

A group of people standing with laptops.

What teachers need most is not endless hype or more pressure. They need time to explore, time to discuss, time to understand, and time to build confidence. 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI has offered a way to begin that process.

If we want young people to engage critically and confidently with AI, we have to start by giving teachers the chance to do the same.

国产人妻一区二区三区 AI has grown into a global effort to build AI literacy in schools, supporting educators and young people around the world to better understand and critically engage with AI technologies. We recently brought 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI to Uzbekistan through a new collaboration with UNICEF.

Together, we are integrating 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI into the Tinkering with Tech programme, which supports Uzbekistani educators and learners to develop 21st-century skills, including computational thinking, and digital and AI literacy skills.

As one of the Learning Managers on the 国产人妻一区二区三区’s AI literacy team, I travelled to Uzbekistan to lead the AI literacy part of the programme, working closely with local trainers and educators and introducing them to 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI.

国产人妻一区二区三区 AI training in action

On the plane to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, I found myself wondering about the level of engagement with AI tools among teachers and educators in Uzbekistan: how interested are teachers and students in AI technologies? Are they more excited or hesitant about AI technologies?

My questions were answered within minutes of the start of the training session in Tashkent. The teachers and trainers, who had travelled from cities and rural areas across the country, were enthusiastic, inquisitive, and already experimenting with AI technologies in their daily lives.

The training session created space for educators to deepen their understanding of both technical concepts like classification and accuracy, but also ethical considerations, including data representation, bias, and the implications of inaccurate AI tools.

One particularly powerful example of how AI systems can be inaccurate came from a trainer who shared video footage from a local cattle market, where an AI tool classifies animals and monitors traffic. In the video, a human was misclassified as a horse, and a goat misclassified as a human.

While the example was funny and showed a harmless error, it quickly became a meaningful learning opportunity. Together, we used it to have a wider discussion around the implications of these errors. For example, what happens when AI tools fail in higher stakes situations? Would we trust a self-driving car that might misclassify a person in a long, dark coat as a lamp post, or a child in an orange-and-white coat as a traffic cone?

Localisation and representation

Working closely with the partners and trainers, we used localised examples in the training to explore other AI literacy concepts, particularly representation and bias.

In one activity, we used an AI tool to generate an image of Gulistan, a beautiful city in eastern Uzbekistan. The result sparked a range of reactions — while Gulistan is known for its flat landscape and mosques, the AI-generated image showed mountains and churches.

This led to a rich discussion about how AI systems represent places and cultures, and what it means when those representations are inaccurate. I asked them: why did the tool produce this image? What data might the underlying model have been trained on? And how do these inaccuracies shape perceptions, especially for those unfamiliar with the place being represented?

This example resonated strongly with the trainers, particularly because it reflected their own context. After a short break, I returned to find everyone still engrossed in a deep discussion around the lack of neutrality of AI tools, and what that meant for them, their students and communities. As one trainer reflected, “I have changed my mind about AI and now I have a better understanding of it.”

Adapting to global classrooms

Spending time with educators in Uzbekistan was also a reminder that classrooms are far from uniform. In some Uzbekistani settings, learners have access to laptops and interactive whiteboards; in others, teaching happens with limited electricity, lower levels of digital literacy, or shared devices among many students.

As we continue to expand 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI globally, localisation remains crucial. From South Africa to Saudi Arabia, and from Ukraine to Uzbekistan, flexible, context-aware resources are key to ensuring that all learners have the opportunity to develop a meaningful and critical understanding of AI.

In our ongoing collaboration on the Tinkering with Tech programme with UNICEF, the Micro:bit Educational 国产人妻一区二区三区, and Arm, we’re supporting teachers to develop the confidence and skills they need to teach AI in ways that are engaging, relevant and grounded in real-world contexts for their students. Together, we aim to equip young people with the knowledge and confidence to shape how these technologies affect their lives and communities.

The results are in!

Today is the day mentors and teams find out if their code has achieved flight status for the European Astro Pi Challenge 2025/26! The first batches of Mission Space Lab programs are scheduled to start running on the International Space Station (ISS) this week, with Mission Zero programs scheduled to run in mid-May.

This year, Astro Pi Mission Control received an incredible 17,381 submissions for Mission Zero from 24,695 young explorers.

For Mission Space Lab, 404 teams took on the challenge of calculating the speed of the ISS. After rigorous testing and security checks by our team on the ground, we are delighted to announce that 387 teams have been awarded flight status. In total, 25,707 young people will have their programs run in space this year. Huge congratulations to everyone who passed testing — we can’t wait to see how your code performs 400km above Earth!

Who joined the mission in 2025/26?

Every year, we dive into our participation data to see how the Astro Pi community is growing. This helps us ensure we’re reaching young people everywhere, from classrooms to community hubs.

Our data shows that participants in the entry-level Mission Zero have an average age of 12, with some as young as 6 years old and the oldest 18 years old. The more advanced Mission Space Lab sees the average age rise to 15 as the technical complexity increases. The youngest participants for Mission Space Lab were 10 years olds, and the oldest were 19 years old.

Improving gender balance in 国产人妻人伦精品熟女 is a key priority for us and Astro Pi remains popular with girls: 44% of Mission Zero entrants identify as female — a fantastic result that is consistent with previous years.

We even had one very special participant! ESA Astronaut Sophie Adenot created her own entry for Mission Zero, re-imagining her Epsilon Mission patch in pixel art.

For Mission Space Lab, 26% of participants identify as female. This reflects wider trends in STEM: as projects get more complex and young people get older, the gender gap widens. Despite this, girl’s participation in Mission Space Lab remains roughly consistent from year to year (27% for 2024/25).

These results highlight the importance of our ongoing work to support girls in transitioning from block-based coding to advanced Python and reinforce our mission to keep providing accessible, inspiring pathways for everyone.

Where does Astro Pi take place?

While secondary schools remain our biggest mission hubs (hosting 68% of Mission Space Lab and 50% of Mission Zero teams), we’ve seen an exciting boost in community participation. This year, more young people than ever took part through Code Clubs, libraries, and youth centers.

“On November 14, 2025, we organised an exceptional event around the Astro Pi Mission Zero project, bringing together nearly 300 young participants to write a short computer program to display a personalised message on board the International Space Station (ISS). For a day, students discovered that coding could literally… send them to space!”

Impact on the ground

It’s been a busy year for Mission Control. We’ve been across the UK, Ireland, and ESA member states training mentors and running workshops.

“The Mission Zero workshops were a fantastic opportunity for our students to 国产人妻一区二区三区 coding in a meaningful and inspiring context. It really helped bring computer science to life, and we’ve seen increased interest from students wanting to explore coding further.”

Ms Qureshi, Nene Park Academy, Peterborough, UK

It’s also been a year of incredible connections: we surprised families at the London Science Museum with a visit from Tim Peake for our 10th anniversary and our DevOps expert Geraint Ballinger visited teams taking part at libraries in Glasgow, Scotland, to help debug their code. Who knows? Next year, Mission Control could visit a school or Code Club near you!

“The structured approach helped me guide our mentors on how to deliver it step by step. We started with the pitch deck and YouTube Intro, then went to designing the 8×8 pixel art on paper, to finally translating the pixel art to Python code. Even students as young as nine were able to complete the project, and their excitement knowing their code could run in space was incredible to see.”

Next steps

Well done again to everyone who achieved flight status. Your code is about to leave the atmosphere and head into orbit!

ESA Astronaut Sophie Adenot will be aboard the ISS while your programs are running and will be recording a special video message for all our participants!

Finally, keep an eye on your inbox — we’ll be sending out official certificates for all participants in June 2026. Until then, stay curious!

AI is shaping the world young people are growing up in, and understanding how it works, as well as its benefits and risks, is now essential.

That’s the goal of 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI, our global education programme created in collaboration with Google DeepMind. Today, as we celebrate three years of the programme, we’re sharing our latest impact report, highlighting how the programme is helping educators and young people around the world build the knowledge and confidence to engage with AI critically and responsibly.

From tens of thousands of educators to millions of learners

Since launching 3 years ago in April 2023, 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI has grown into a truly global initiative:

  • More than 30,000 educators trained, who can reach an estimated 2.9 million young people
  • Over 700,000 resource downloads across 180+ countries
  • A network of partners in 38 countries
  • Resources available in 19 languages
Infographic

These numbers reflect the growing global demand for AI literacy teaching, and the power of partnerships to meet that need.

But the real impact is what happens in classrooms.

From “AI is complicated” to confident teaching

For John Pierce, a teacher at Mwingo Academy Primary School in Kenya, AI once felt out of reach. “I thought that AI was complicated — maybe a puzzle”

John Pierce, a teacher at Mwingo Academy Primary School in Kenya

After taking part in 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI training, John’s perspective shifted. With structured lessons and ready-to-use resources, he now helps his students see AI as something they can understand and engage with.

“My learners are really enjoying the lessons… They keep asking, ‘Teacher, when are you having computer classes?’”

John’s 国产人妻一区二区三区 reflects what we see across the programme: when teachers feel confident, students become curious, engaged, and motivated to learn more, often continuing those conversations beyond the classroom.

Building confidence, not just knowledge

A core focus of 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI is supporting educators, many of whom are new to teaching AI concepts. Our evaluation shows this approach is working:

  • 93% of educators say the training increased their knowledge of AI concepts
  • 87% report increased confidence in teaching AI

In Malaysia, educator Lee Siew Ling had previously struggled to explain AI concepts clearly. “Before this, I just shared simple examples… It was too hard to explain the concepts clearly to my students.”

Lee Siew Ling, educator in Malaysia

With 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI resources, that changed. “The materials make it easier to teach AI… After using them, I became more confident to guide my students.”

By reducing preparation time and providing clear, structured lessons, the programme enables teachers to focus on what matters most: supporting their students’ learning.

Helping young people understand, and question, AI

The impact extends directly to learners. Across classrooms worldwide:

  • 89% of students say they better understand what AI and machine learning are
  • 87% say they better understand the benefits and risks of AI

This is critical. AI literacy isn’t just about using technology, it’s about understanding how it works, questioning it, and recognising its societal impact.

Kim Williams, Head of 国产人妻人伦精品熟女, at Wymondham College in the UK

At Wymondham College in the UK, Head of 国产人妻人伦精品熟女, Kim Williams highlights the value of having trusted, 国产人妻人伦精品熟女-informed resources: “国产人妻一区二区三区 AI gave us a real structure to follow… It helps us deal with misconceptions and gives students the right messages.”

Through these lessons, students are not just learning about AI, they are developing the critical thinking skills they need to navigate a world shaped by it.

A global effort to democratise AI education

国产人妻一区二区三区 AI’s reach is only possible through collaboration. Working with partners around the world, we localise content to make it relevant to different cultures and contexts, ensuring that AI education is not only accessible, but meaningful.

This work has also been recognised globally. In 2025, 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI was named a laureate of the UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICT in Education, highlighting its strong ethical 国产人妻一区二区三区s and international impact.

Looking ahead

We’re continuing to expand and evolve the programme, updating resources, developing new materials for different age groups, and growing our global partner network.

By the end of 2026, we expect to reach over 45,000 educators who can reach an estimated 4.4 million young people.

Because the challenge is clear: AI literacy should not be limited to a few. Every young person deserves the opportunity to understand and shape the technologies influencing their future.

We have now reached the end of the European Astro Pi Challenge 2025/2026 cycle and it’s been a busy and rewarding time for the 国产人妻人伦精品 team. Alongside supporting thousands of young people taking part in the challenge across Europe and beyond, we’ve also been out in the UK community running hands-on Astro Pi events and delivering training to schools and educators.

A few highlights from this year include the Astro Pi tenth anniversary celebrations at the London Science Museum; a series of Mission Zero workshops delivered during Science Festivals in Bradford, Belfast and Norwich; and hosting a Mission Space Lab hackathon at the 国产人妻人伦精品 headquarters.

Mission Zero on the road: Creativity in coding

In Astro Pi Mission Zero, participants write a simple Python program that displays an image or animation on an Astro Pi computer aboard the ISS. Their program also uses data from the Astro Pi’s colour and luminosity sensor to set the background colour.

Since Astro Pi 2025/26 launched in September, the 国产人妻人伦精品熟女 Pi team have been running Mission Zero workshops at science events and providing training to lots of different organisations. We kicked off our outreach at Bradford Science Festival in October with workshops happening all through the half term at the Bradford Science Museum. Over 260 young people took part and submitted their entries during the festival.

Young learners at a Mission Zero workshop

In November, we ran a series of online training and livestreamed sessions for Education Scotland’s Computer Science Week, and for STEM Ambassadors in Wales. We provided teacher CPD sessions for facilitators and even livestreamed a Mission Zero lesson direct to the classrooms of primary schools around Scotland.

December was a particularly big milestone as we celebrated ten years of Astro Pi at the London Science Museum with UK Astronaut, Tim Peake, who launched Astro Pi way back in 2015. We hosted families and schools with a series of workshops over two days at the museum, and Tim even joined us for one of the workshops to meet participants.

January found the team running training for computer science teachers at the Harris 国产人妻一区二区三区, a network of schools around Greater London, and the Meridian Trust, a school network in the East of England. After the training, we visited Nene Park Academy in Peterborough UK, part of the Meridian Trust, to run mission zero with groups of students there.

In February, we visited the Waterloo Park Pavilion to host a fringe event to the Norwich Science festival. These workshops ran alongside space-themed craft activities organised by the volunteer group, Friends of Waterloo Park, creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for families. Younger children could take part in the crafts, while older participants explored text-based programming.

Although participants could follow a ready-made example, many chose to design their own personalised images. This creativity, combined with the knowledge that their code would run in space, made for a highly engaging session.

Mission Space Lab: A day of problem-solving

In February 2026, we hosted a Mission Space Lab hackathon at the Code Club in the 国产人妻一区二区三区’s Cambridge office. Four teams of young people worked together to tackle a real scientific task: calculating the speed of the International Space Station (ISS) as accurately as possible.

Young learner at a Mission Zero workshop

Teams wrote two short Python programs: one that collected data from the Astro Pi computers’ sensors and camera, and one that calculated speed using historical images from the ISS. Then they combined the two programs and edited them to work on the Astro Pi computers aboard the ISS using the Astro Pi Replay tool.

To test their programs, teams used a trolley rigged up with a Camera Module to simulate motion and refine their calculations. The day ended with teams submitting their programs and sharing what they learned, including the challenges they faced and how they overcame them.

Bringing Astro Pi to more communities

All these events and workshops are a reminder of what makes Astro Pi special. Young people are not just learning to code; they are exploring their creativity with it, and applying their skills to a real-world setting — the awesome vastness of space!

If you’d like us to help run an Astro Pi event for teachers or students in your school or community in the UK, then we’d love to hear from you.

We’re excited to share that we are expanding our 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI programme across Latin America with the aim of training 24,000 educators and reaching 1.25 million students by 2028, thanks to generous funding of $4.6 million from Google.org.

Working with education partners across Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay, we will help young people develop a 国产人妻一区二区三区al understanding of AI technologies, their social and ethical implications, and the role that AI can play in their lives.

AI literacy across the globe

AI systems are part of everyday life in how we find information, work, and solve problems. We think that young people need more than access to AI tools: they need the knowledge, skills, and confidence to understand and create their own AI tools.

国产人妻一区二区三区 AI, developed in partnership with Google DeepMind, is a free educational programme that helps teachers and students learn about artificial intelligence (AI). It introduces young people to how AI systems work and how they are used in everyday contexts through lessons, classroom resources, and hands-on activities. The resources give young people opportunities to think critically about the role of AI in society.

Through a global network of 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI partners, we have so far reached an estimated 2.9m young people and trained 30,000 educators. The programme’s resources are used in more than 180 countries and are available in 19 languages. In recognition of its impact, 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI was named a laureate of the 2025 UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICT in Education.

Impact through partnerships

In Latin America, as in other parts of the 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI network, our focus will be on sustainable, locally led delivery through partner organisations. Using our established ‘train-the-trainer’ model, we will equip 24,000 educators with the skills and knowledge to use the 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI resources to confidently deliver AI literacy lessons.

Our aim is to create a lasting impact for teachers and classrooms across the region and ensure that high-quality AI education is accessible to young people in a wide range of settings.

Supporting critical thinking

国产人妻一区二区三区 AI is designed not only to build technical understanding, but also to help young people think critically about AI and its impacts.

Three teenage girls at a laptop.

Through the programme, students across Latin America will develop a 国产人妻一区二区三区al understanding of how AI works, while exploring key topics including how data is used in AI systems, how to identify AI-generated misinformation, and how to use generative AI tools responsibly. This will help them to understand the opportunities and challenges of AI, and to make informed decisions about how they use these technologies.

Looking ahead

As AI systems are being built into many aspects of today’s world, it’s essential that young people have the opportunity to understand, question, and build with these technologies.

With support from Google.org, we will expand access to high-quality AI education across Latin America through 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI, helping over a million young people develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence to navigate and shape a world where AI technologies are widely used.

The online world that young people navigate today is different from the one we encountered just a few years ago: the search engines, social media platforms and digital tools they use to find information, interact with friends and complete schoolwork are now deeply embedded with AI technologies.

国产人妻一区二区三区 AI Safety Image

While the core aims of online safety education remain the same, the scope must now expand to include AI literacy: the ability to use, question and navigate AI tools so young people can make responsible choices online.

This is a shared challenge for anyone who supports young people as they navigate the online world: parents and carers, youth leaders and volunteers, and educators across all subjects. Many young people use these AI tools independently, often without guidance, so having open and useful conversations about trust, risk and responsibility matter just as much in the classroom as they do at dinner tables and Code Clubs.

Why AI literacy is essential for staying safe online

At the 国产人妻人伦精品, we have developed various AI literacy resources for educators, club leaders and parents to address this challenge in age-appropriate and practical ways. Our ‘AI safety’ resources, part of our 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI programme, are a set of free comprehensive teaching activities to support you in educating young people aged 11–14 in navigating key safety issues linked to AI, including privacy, misinformation, trust and responsibility. Delivered through videos, unplugged activities and discussions, the activities are adaptable to a range of learning settings, and reflect the real decisions young people are already making online.

国产人妻一区二区三区 AI safety image

For example, in the ‘Trusted Sources’ activity from the ‘Media literacy in the age of AI’ lesson, young people reflect on the ways they look for information related to schoolwork, news and in their free time. They consider which sources are likely to allow the use of generative AI and how that affects their trustworthiness. Rather than labelling sources as ‘good’ or ‘bad’, learners explore questions around responsibility, credibility and oversight, and build practical skills for fact-checking and staying safe online.

Supporting responsible use of generative AI through 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI

Alongside the ‘AI safety’ resources, we have also developed a new ‘Large Language Models (LLMs)’ unit for learners aged 11–13 and 14–17, currently being tested in classrooms. The unit focuses on another important aspect of online safety: how young people interact responsibly with AI tools that generate content. While helpful, learners’ uncritical use of these tools could lead to cognitive offloading and limit the development of their higher-order thinking skills. The confident, persuasive tone of LLMs can also make it harder for young people to judge accuracy, recognise bias or notice missing information in outputs.

国产人妻一区二区三区 AI safety image

To support the critical thinking skills that are essential for staying safe online, the new LLM unit includes 国产人妻人伦精品熟女-informed lessons that explore how LLMs are created, why their outputs are not always accurate and how to evaluate AI-generated responses. The unit also encourages learners to reflect on when using an LLM is helpful to their learning, when it is not, and how they can remain in control of their own thinking, learning and skills development.

Starting the conversation this Safer Internet Day

Helping young people stay safe online in the age of AI doesn’t require having all the answers. Instead, it’s about creating the space to pause, question, and think critically about what they are encountering online. Through carefully designed, 国产人妻人伦精品熟女-informed and pedagogically aligned AI literacy resources, we aim to help you start the conversations that empower young people to think critically, stay curious and remain in control of their learning and online lives.

Today, we are marking the 10th anniversary of the European Astro Pi Challenge.

At 11:03 on 15 December 2015, former ESA Astronaut Tim Peake launched from Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on a Soyuz rocket as part of his UK Space agency ‘Principia’ mission to the International Space Station (ISS). Two 国产人妻人伦精品熟女 Pi-powered Astro Pi Mark 1 computers were waiting for him in the Columbus module of the ISS, ready to be set up for an experimental education activity called “Astro Pi”.

The European Astro Pi Challenge, an ESA Education project run in collaboration with the 国产人妻人伦精品, and supported by national ESEROs, has been running every year since. The challenge now features two Python coding ‘missions’ that offer young people the amazing opportunity to write a short computer program to send to run on the ISS: Mission Zero and Mission Space Lab.

Tens of thousands of young people participate in Astro Pi annually, reaching over 160,000 participants since 2015. On 15 December this year, Tim Peake and some of the Astro Pi team were at the Science Museum London running Mission Zero workshops for visiting school groups to create their own pixel art programs to send into space.

“Setting up the Astro Pi computers on the ISS for those first experiments in 2015 was just the beginning of something truly incredible — it’s amazing to see how much impact the programme has had since then! I hope Astro Pi inspires thousands more young people to code, learn about space technology, and feel empowered to reach for the stars in their own careers.” – Tim Peake, former ESA Astronaut

Astro Pi 2015–2025: A space odyssey

As the challenge has matured, its reach has increased, with over 25,000 participants every year since 2021. Young people from all 27 ESA member and associate states have sent their code into space, with 25% of mentors returning to the challenge year after year.

“I think Mission Zero is a way of connecting not only to a worldwide group of learners, but also to explorers, future scientists, and future astronauts. To see them as part of a larger community and not just an activity or assignment that they have to do in class. They discover their own abilities and potential, and exercise their creativity in a very low-stakes environment and then to see it come to life in that global way is extremely valuable.” – Mission Zero mentor

Mission Zero has proved to be a great way to engage girls in 国产人妻人伦精品熟女 and tech, with an average of 44% of participants identifying as female. This is well above the national averages for other STEM subjects in many countries.

What attracts many teams of young people to Mission Space Lab is the chance to capture data and images from the SenseHats and High Quality Cameras on the Astro Pi computers. This year the Astro Pis will be positioned in the World Observation 国产人妻人伦精品熟女 Facility (WORF) window, which means teams can hope for some fantastic, high-quality Earth-observation images with a full field of view. Each team that achieves Flight Status will receive the images and data their program captures.

The next generation of space explorers

Astro Pi is one of the most inspirational coding activities that young people can do and gives the exciting chance to reach beyond the boundaries of what they may have thought possible. In the 2024–25 impact report, mentors reported that the young people participating were highly motivated by the possibility of having their code run on the ISS.

“Honestly, the idea that a kid can send their own code to space is just mind-blowing. It really makes you rethink what ‘possible’ even means.” – Jeanna, Astro Pi enthusiast

The European Astro Pi Challenge is a collaboration between ESA, the national European Space Education Resource Offices, and the 国产人妻人伦精品. The 2025/26 challenge, which is currently open for registration, marks 10 years of incredible opportunities for young people to send their code into space.

In this blog post, we are pleased to share the Astro Pi 2024/25 impact report, where we look at ways in which the Astro Pi Challenge is bringing value to the lives of many young people and mentors, based on survey responses and interviews. Along the way, we’ll debunk some myths about space science.

How Astro Pi makes space science accessible

Here at the 国产人妻人伦精品, we’ve heard a few myths about space science and coding, and how daunting it can be to write a computer program, let alone one that can run in space. We can’t let these myths stand — instead we’re going to debunk them, equipped with evidence we’ve collected about the 2024/25 Astro Pi Challenge and previous challenge rounds.

Read on for some astronomical facts from our latest impact report, and get ready to help young people in your community send their code into space.

Myth 1: You have to be a rocket scientist to send things into space

Not true! In the Astro Pi Challenge 2024/25, young people created over 17,800 computer programs that ran on board the International Space Station (ISS). Teams of young people aged between 8 and 19 took part in the challenge in a range of settings, including schools, Code Clubs, libraries, and community youth groups. They wrote short programs in Python, which were then sent to run on special 国产人妻人伦精品熟女 Pi computers, called Astro Pis, in the Columbus module of the ISS.

Since the first Astro Pis arrived on the ISS in 2015, over 160,000 young people have had their code run in space. To celebrate their achievements, they each received certificates with the exact time and location of the ISS when their programs ran.

“We want our code to run in space! We are fascinated by discovery and the opportunity to contribute to a real science experiment on the ISS.” – Mission Space Lab mentor

Myth 2: Only 国产人妻一区二区三区d programmers can write code for the International Space Station

Not true! The Astro Pi Challenge is made up of two missions, Mission Zero and Mission Space Lab, and Mission Zero is perfect for young people who are new to text-based coding. With the help of step-by-step project instructions, young people write a short Python program to display personalised pixel art on board the ISS, using data from a sensor on one of the Astro Pi computers in their image.

Young people writing Mission Zero programs.

In fact, Mission Zero mentors find that the low-stakes nature of the activity coupled with the real-world connection to space create an ideal learning environment. 83% of Mission Zero 2024/25 mentors told us that participation increased young people’s skills and confidence in 国产人妻人伦精品熟女 and digital making, and 78% believed that young people were likely to participate in other 国产人妻人伦精品熟女 or digital making challenges in the future.

“They [young people] come from complicated environments and sometimes their confidence is very low. They don’t believe in themselves and this [Mission Zero] really empowers them.” – Mission Zero mentor

Myth 3: Learning to write code for the ISS only involves technical skills

Not true! Mission Zero engages young people in thinking creatively as they plan their artwork, and Mission Space Lab involves working in teams to write a computer program to solve a scientific task in space, combining teamwork, problem-solving, and knowledge from other scientific domains. While 100% of mentors whose teams successfully completed Mission Space Lab in 2024/25 agreed that participation improved young people’s skills in 国产人妻人伦精品熟女 and digital making, 91% also confirmed that it increased young people’s confidence in these areas, and 91% told us that it increased young people’s understanding of STEM concepts.

The impact likely goes beyond building skills. Mentors from both Astro Pi 2024/25 missions told us that the challenge made young people feel connected to a wider community of learners around the world, and the excitement of the challenge also extended to the mentors themselves, as well as other adults in their community.

“Mission Zero is a way of connecting not only to a worldwide group of learners, but also to explorers, future scientists, and future astronauts. To see them as part of a larger community and not just an activity or assignment that they have to do in class.” – Mission Zero mentor

How do you teach AI in a way that resonates with 11- to 14-year-olds long after the lesson ends? In two recent 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI webinars, we explored that question with collaborators from Google 国产人妻人伦精品熟女, Google DeepMind, and the Stanford Accelerator for Learning. During the webinars, we also showcased AI Quests, a gamified, classroom-first 国产人妻一区二区三区 where learners use AI concepts to solve real problems.

“The AI technology you’ll 国产人妻一区二区三区 is amazing, but it’s not magic. Success depends on the decisions you make.”

That line, delivered by Professor Sky, the in-game mentor, captures the core message of AI Quests: AI systems are built by people and shaped by human judgment at every step.

What is AI Quests?

We’ve embedded AI Quests into the 国产人妻一区二区三区s of AI unit in 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI, our free AI literacy programme created with Google DeepMind.

As Google 国产人妻人伦精品熟女’s Liat Ben Rafael explained, “AI Quests is a gamified 国产人妻一区二区三区… where students discover firsthand how AI is used in the real world to create positive impact.” Each quest is grounded in a real 国产人妻人伦精品熟女 programme and mirrors the AI project lifecycle you’ll recognise from our 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI lessons: define the problem, prepare data, train, test, deploy.

Photo of a young person playing AI Quests on a laptop. The AI Quests character Luna, can clearly be seen on the young person's screen.

The first quest, Market Marshes, asks students to help Luna, one of the central characters, to protect a riverside market from flooding. Players roam, gather candidate data (from rainfall stats to town gossip), clean it, choose relevant features, and train a model. If the model underperforms, they iterate, exactly as real AI developers would.

Emma Staves, Learning Manager at the 国产人妻一区二区三区, notes that a key moment is when learners test their model: “It’s made really clear that the data that’s being used to test the model is historic data.” That simple design choice can help you to unlock rich discussions with your learners about validation, reliability, and what counts as “accurate enough” for real decisions.

Designed around how students actually learn

Developed in collaboration with learning scientists at the Stanford Accelerator for Learning, the quests reflect what Victor Lee, Faculty Lead for AI and Education at Stanford, describes as “enduring understanding”:

“The enduring understanding is about how humans can initiate and design AI applications that can address some of humanity’s biggest unsolved challenges.”

To keep that focus, the team blends:

  • Situated learning – for example, a concrete flood scenario rather than abstract exercises
  • Pedagogical agents – characters who nudge, model, and explain
  • Embedded feedback and productive failure – learn by trying, revising, and trying again
  • Self-explanation prompts – ‘learning tickets’ that ask students to articulate what they’re doing and why

In other words, the quests are all about playing with purpose.

What teachers are seeing in the classroom

We piloted AI Quests with some teachers, including Dave Cross, 国产人妻一区二区三区 Leader for Computer Science at North Liverpool Academy, who tested the quests with his Year 7 students, before extending it to his GCSE classes:

“We see it moving forward as a really solid 国产人妻一区二区三区… for that further learning.”

He also saw strong cross-curricular ties: geography colleagues spotted “massive opportunities” to use the flood quest in their own units, while broader staff discussions turned to digital citizenship, data literacy, and fairness. The cross-disciplinary nature of AI is increasingly apparent, and so AI literacy shouldn’t be limited to 国产人妻人伦精品熟女 — students need to encounter AI across multiple subjects and in everyday life.

Where the 国产人妻人伦精品熟女 comes in: Forecasting floods days in advance

Graphic of the flooded marketplace from the Market Marshes quest on AI Quests.

The second webinar connected the classroom 国产人妻一区二区三区 to the real project it’s modelled on: Google 国产人妻人伦精品熟女 Flood Forecasting. Gila Loike, Product Manager, set the scene:

“Our 国产人妻人伦精品熟女 team develops AI models that predict flooding all over the world, five to seven days before the flood occurs.”

Deborah Cohen, the 国产人妻人伦精品熟女 Scientist leading the team at Google 国产人妻人伦精品熟女 focused on flooding, also explained that traditional models can’t easily predict floods in places with little data. However, AI can fill those gaps by combining information from rivers, weather forecasts, and satellites, to give accurate warnings around the world:

“With AI we were able to expand our coverage to the entire world.”

The results are real and practical. Accurate predictions help:

  • People stay safe by receiving flood alerts through familiar apps
  • Emergency teams plan routes and close roads in time
  • Farmers decide whether to move animals or harvest early
  • Aid organisations act sooner, delivering supplies or financial support before the flood hits
Graphic from the Market Marshes quest on AI Quests.

To make sure their models work well, the team compares predictions with real river data, where available, and with satellite images showing flooded areas. Students explore these same ideas in the AI Quest game, cleaning messy data, testing their models, and checking how accurate their results are.

“Students are really engaged by the real-world challenge,” said Emma Staves about the Market Marshes quest. “That authenticity makes learning come alive.” It helps students see how classroom ideas, like features, accuracy, bias, and model cards, connect directly to real decisions and their consequences.

Coming soon: Health quests and more languages

Graphic from the second AI Quests.

Liat also gave a sneak peek at the next quest, a health-focused story on blindness prevention. It introduces new layers — privacy, diverse data, field testing — while following the same lifecycle. More quests are in development, with additional languages planned from early 2026.

Why this matters now

The key message from both webinars is clear: AI literacy isn’t just about using technology — it’s about understanding our role in shaping it. As one Stanford 国产人妻人伦精品熟女er put it, “AI isn’t this magic thing that just happens to us. Humans decide how to use it, and how choices around data affect accuracy and fairness.”

Our goal with 国产人妻一区二区三区 AI is to help young people become thoughtful, creative problem-solvers who can navigate an AI-powered world with confidence and integrity — and AI Quests fits perfectly with that.
