During his time in space, Tim has been using Ed and Izzy to run apps, carry out science experiments and play music designed and coded by UK school students, and he’s taken some great photos of them on the station:

Both computers have also spent some weeks in a flight recorder mode, saving sensor readings to a database every ten seconds, and we’ve made these space data available for everyone to download and analyse. Ed and Izzy will say goodbye to Tim when he returns from space this Saturday; you’ll be able to watch him land. Our Astro Pi units will stay on board the ISS until 2022, and we hope we’ll soon be able to share exciting news about what they’ll be doing next. Stay tuned!

Our intrepid Astro Pi units Izzy and Ed launched in December and were deployed by British ESA astronaut Tim Peake in February. We’ve seen the first part of their animated adventures; now we bring you the second part of their story, featuring some very special guests.

We’re especially excited that our Astro Pis have met Robonaut, NASA’s humanoid robot, as well as human crew members from ESA, NASA and Roscosmos.

After Ed and Izzy finished running apps and experiments coded by UK school students, they entered a flight recorder mode where they saved sensor readings to a database every ten seconds. They each recorded their orientation and acceleration, as well as temperature, humidity and pressure, over a period of about two weeks. We’ve now made the data they recorded on the ISS available for everyone to download, so you can analyse it any way you like, and we’ve also prepared a Flight Data Analysis resource to help you interpret and handle the data. We’re really looking forward to seeing how you use these data to analyse and interpret the movement of the space station and the environment on board.

Both Astro Pi units have been tweeting about some of their activities, including some great Earth observation images from Izzy, and they’re also talking about opportunities to get involved with their mission. Follow Ed and Izzy on Twitter to see what they’re up to!

If you’ve been keeping an eye on our blog, you’ll know that this month, UK students have another chance to send their code to Tim in space with our 2016 coding challenges. Today we’re excited to announce that a panel of top-flight judges have generously offered their time to help us select the winners.

Both challenges relate to music: Tim wants students to write a Python program to turn an Astro Pi flight unit into an MP3 media player, and he’d like people to write electronic music in Sonic Pi for him to listen to on the player. So we’re delighted that we’ll have musicians including synthpop giants OMD and film composer Ilan Eshkeri, as well as experts from the aerospace industry and our own crack team of developers, to help pick out winning entries from what we know will be an amazing field.

If you’re aged 18 or under and in the UK, and you’d like these amazing artists, space engineers and computer scientists to see your work, submit your entry via the Astro Pi website by 31 March!

If you’re already working on our new coding challenges, be sure to read on for news of a new requirement that we have introduced to one of them, to take account of operational constraints we have to abide by in order to run code on the ISS.

Tim Peake explained to us that he enjoys listening to music while exercising, which is a daily activity for him during his mission. But he won’t be able to upload new music to his player because the software used for this isn’t allowed on the ISS laptops. To solve this problem, Tim invites UK students to try two coding challenges: one is to write a program to turn an Astro Pi flight unit into an MP3 media player that he can operate using its buttons, and the other is to write a tune in Sonic Pi for him to listen to on the MP3 player.

You can try both challenges, or just one. Up to four winners for each challenge will have their code uploaded to the International Space Station and run on Tim Peake’s Astro Pi units.

The Sonic Pi music challenge is an exciting, creative challenge that you can carry out whether or not you have any 网站大全免费 of coding, and without any special hardware. Go to the Sonic Pi music challenge page to see exactly what you need to do, and to find resources that will introduce you to everything you need to know to start work on an amazing electronic tune for Tim.

The MP3 Music Player challenge is an interesting task for people who already have some 网站大全免费 of Python programming. For this challenge, you’ll need to use hardware the same as Tim’s to develop and test your program, so you’ll need access to a 乳色吐息1～2集免费观看 Pi and a Sense HAT, which are available to buy online. The MP3 Music Player challenge page explains the requirements for your MP3 player, and links to resources that will help you meet them.

We’ve added a new requirement for the MP3 Music Player challenge since announcing it earlier this month, because the European Space Agency has explained that, due to operational constraints, we can’t upload new Raspbian or Pip packages to the ISS to support the new coding challenges. You can read more about the restriction and what it means on Astro Pi’s GitHub. Happily, it’s not hard to work around this restriction, and to help you get going, we’ve created two examples of MP3 playback that are known to work on the Astro Pis in space, and that you can adapt and integrate into your own code.

It’s not often that you get the chance to send something you’ve created into orbit – don’t miss out! Check out the new challenges, pick one and start working on your code to send into space. You’ve got until 12pm 31 March to submit your entries. We, Ed, Izzy and Tim can’t wait to see them.

We were all absolutely thrilled when we discovered that competition winner Hannah Belshaw would be appearing on BBC One’s very popular live magazine programme, The One Show, along with Tim Peake, who will fly to the ISS to begin his six-month mission, Principia, in December.

Tim features throughout the first half of the show, and you can find Hannah and hear Tim talk about the Astro Pi mission from 9 minutes 15 seconds. The programme on iPlayer is only made available within the UK, but no matter where you are in the world, you can see from our screenshots that both Hannah and Tim are very happy to be on the show!

Tim explained to a peak-time audience that,

[T]his Astro Pi is going to be in various different modules running an experiment each week, and I’m going to send down the data so that during the mission [the schoolchildren] can see the data, see what they’ve managed to achieve, and if they need to modify the code they can send it back up to me and we’ll just keep that going throughout the mission.

We’re enormously excited that school students will be able to communicate with Tim while he’s on the International Space Station!

Hannah, who made her TV appearance wearing a real space suit, entered the Astro Pi competition with her design for a program that captures data from the Astro Pi’s many sensors for visualisation later in a Minecraft world. She entered at the primary-school level, so the code for her entry was written, under her guidance, by Minecraft expert Martin O’Hanlon. Columns of blocks represent environmental measurements such as pressure and humidity, and a giant, blocky model of the Space Station itself represents its movement and orientation, so that it will be possible to play back everything the Astro Pi detects while Tim Peake is running the program in space.

And you can get involved: all the hardware (except for the specially designed, space-grade aluminium flight cases) is available to buy, so that while Tim Peake is operating the Astro Pis in space, you can use exactly the same equipment on Earth.

Tim spoke about Astro Pi during the conference, too – you’ll hear him talk about it starting 25 minutes in, with slightly more detail than was possible within The One Show‘s format, but we strongly encourage you to listen to as much of the recording as you can, because it’s all tremendously interesting!

Tim will launch on a Soyuz spacecraft from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 11:02 GMT on 15 December 2015, along with NASA astronaut Tim Kopra and Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko. They are expected to rendezvous with the ISS later the same day, at 16:58 GMT. Our Astro Pi flight units should already be there when they arrive, since they’re scheduled for an earlier flight with a planned launch date of 3 December. With both launches just weeks away, we’re immensely excited, not only about the Astro Pi mission, but also about Mission Principia as a whole. It’s been six months since I started with 乳色吐息1～2集免费观看 Pi. To begin with, I was terrified and felt like I didn’t belong, but I’ve reached a point where I’m truly enjoying what I’m learning. People think of arts and science/technology as polar opposites, but I’ve always thought that the two can be merged in diverse and constructive ways. Thankfully, 乳色吐息1～2集免费观看 Pi think so too, and have let me mess around with ways to do this. My hope is that in the future more creative types will utilise technology in their work, and it will be beautiful. So today I’m sharing a few tips to help you get started. Of course, I’m nowhere near an expert, but I do know exactly what it’s like to enter the world of technology as an outsider and beginner.

Treat learning to code like learning a language

There is a good reason why it’s called a coding language. It has grammatical rules to structure what you’re inputting: for example, when to use brackets and quotation marks and full stops and capitals. Coding is just as vast as any other language, and there are dozens of different coding languages to choose from, each with their own idiosyncrasies. And it takes just as long to learn. You can’t expect to pick it up without using it frequently; practice is key. You need to devote time to learning the rules, but there’s plenty of opportunity to get help.

I would recommend the book Python for Kids by Jason Briggs. It is designed for children, but suck it up and it’ll prove it be a useful tool. I use it as a reference guide, dipping in and out, but not necessarily reading it from A to Z. There are also free online courses, and an infinite amount of documentation to learn from.

It’s more creative than you think

If the thought of learning a language makes you want to cry, then don’t despair. Just as creative writers use language to create complex and thought-provoking stories, so does code. When constructed correctly, code forms a kind of linear narrative, telling the computer what happens and when, just like how stories inform the reader. Something equally creative and varied happens too, whether that’s a video game or a dancing robot. It also requires a lot of editing.

What’s more, the community of digital makers, hackers and programmers includes lots of people who are just as imaginative as writers in traditional media. When I was at Maker Faire UK, I was inspired by how creative the makers were. The exhibits were full of people who had started out with a question: ‘I wonder what happens when I do this?’ They put two things together (or five, or six), and if it explodes then it’s all the more fun (except when you have to buy another part to replace it; oh well). It’s an open, free way of exploring and creating. The key is to not limit your mind, not to set goals (although tempting) but to focus on experimenting with pushing the boundaries of the technology.

Prepare to change your mindset, and don’t be disappointed when it doesn’t work

I say when because, inevitably, it won’t work. Even if you’re following guidelines or instructions, eventually something is bound to go wrong. I struggled a lot in the beginning because I didn’t know how to make the tech do what I wanted it to, and thought I was a failure. I’ve got into the habit now of thinking, ‘Okay, why didn’t it do that?’ and ‘It’s interesting that it’s done x instead of y’. Let the technology surprise you.

Part of learning is accepting that maybe you won’t be good at it straight away, or you won’t pick it up naturally. A lot of people, especially young women, feel a pressure to be good straight away. Don’t worry about other people’s expectations, just have fun with it. You may learn more slowly than others (I certainly do!) and that is perfectly okay. This is why an open mind is so useful. I’ve had to completely change my mindset over the past few months, but I’m glad I did. Although writing is creative, I’ve been doing it so long that I have a process and routine. I know what I want to write when I begin; I have set intentions and goals, and I set time limits. When it comes to programming, this mindset does not work at all.

Things will not go as you planned. Things will break, or you’ll make mistakes, and the outcome is entirely different to what you expected. This can (as it did for me) lead you to feel like you’ve accomplished nothing. The best thing is to have no expectations of yourself other than to learn something, or try something new.

Steal from your heroes and ask for help

This is a statement that often crops up in the literary world, but it applies here too. I mean, don’t literally steal; always give credit when you’ve used someone else’s code, or a tutorial. But it’s often easier to adapt other people’s work rather than make something entirely original. It also integrates you into the community, and creators will often be really pleased to see their work put to use!

I have recently been creating mini projects with Scratch, a programming environment that lets you develop interactive narratives and games. It functions like code, but instead of typing, you drag and drop components to build the script. I even published a mini game which you can play yourself!

The best thing about Scratch is that for every project, you can look at the ‘code’ being used. I made my game by finding similar projects and seeing how they work. After doing this for days on end, I got used to the various functions, and now I enjoy throwing bits together and seeing what happens. I’ve spent so much time on Scratch I’ve actually started dreaming in Scratch code!

Scratch also has a great community, and users will always be happy to reply to forum posts if you get stuck. This leads me on to asking for help. Do it. Websites like GitHub exist so you can share your code with others, not only so they can use it, but so people can suggest improvements or fix problems. The online community is vast and amazing, so use it!

Remember, if you don’t try you don’t succeed. And I’d always prefer to try and fail than never do anything at all. If you’d like to talk more about this tech world, please feel free to contact me.

A minute of video opened with the title “English Classroom”, but it didn’t look like my high school English lessons. Students work around computers, ignoring the camera as they concentrate intently on… wait, is that Minecraft?

I got in touch with Miss Roman to find out more. She intends (for starters) to get students in her Junior Honors class – that is, 15- and 16-year-olds – building Pi-based games consoles with games that draw on their reading of Dracula by Bram Stoker, and she is raising funds to kit out her classroom with 乳色吐息1～2集免费观看 Pis and accessories. The students will use Scratch, working collaboratively to create their own graphics, sounds, and housing for the console. Older students will be using the 乳色吐息1～2集免费观看 Pis in their study of William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying. Of course, these plans are only the beginning of the road for the Pis, both within and beyond Miss Roman’s classroom; her project proposal notes that there could be an opportunity to work with other instructors to show them how they might use 乳色吐息1～2集免费观看 Pi in their teaching.

This isn’t the first time that Miss Roman has introduced video games to the English Literature classroom. Last year, Juniors reading William Golding’s Lord of the Flies worked in groups to build the island where the story is set from the imagery evidence they found in the text, adding significant quotes and moments to it via signposts and books; putting each student group into the same Minecraft world allowed them to explore each other’s work. Students were thrilled to use information from the book to build their own islands, and would sigh when the class came to an end. Miss Roman says,

Essentially, the Pi is helping me to integrate fiction and nonfiction, different literacies, and boost creative thinking […] I’m extremely happy with the Pi, and I’m sometimes staggered by the applicability it has for my classroom. I think that complex texts and ideas deserve projects that offer complexity as well, and by opening avenues of this kind for students, they have the ability to understand texts in ways that haven’t been previously accessed.

We’re excited to learn about 乳色吐息1～2集免费观看 Pi being used in this way, and we hope that this crowdfunding campaign garners plenty of support – we’d love to hear more from New Jersey as this project takes off!
